ithilmenel Part One The next night, Sungmin had to stop himself several times from practically breaking his neck to look at every table and booth in search of his mystery man.
His.
The thought alone caused him to let out a bit of a snort. It had become painfully clear that it only took about three minutes for the man to get under his skin. It was no small feat at all really. He took pride in the fact that in every bit of this job he remained nothing short of professional. There was never even the smallest bit of worry in him wanting to get involved with a client. None at all. Except it seemed like the man made of ice had intrigued him to the point that he was dying to know more. Dying to spend just a few more minutes with him. Hell, he was a heartbeat away from using his own tips to buy the man another private dance.
Time went by and he started to come to the realization that he wasn’t going to see him tonight. He tried his best not to show any bits of disappointment but the others could see it. Yet the only one that chose to say a word about it to him was Hyukjae.
“Sungmin-ah, what’s with you tonight?” Hyukjae stated looking at him in a rather curious light through his mirror as he prepared to go on stage. “You’ve been on edge all night long.”
Sungmin wasn’t really going to answer back but the man just kept looking at him. “Nothing. Nothing’s going on.” It was a valiant attempt at looking and even sounding completely honest but Hyukjae knew him too well. He saw past the act all too easily.
“Sure nothing is going on. Not a thing to have you pacing around ignoring the ones that tip the best just to look to the next table over.” he went back to preparing but didn’t stop speaking there. “If I didn’t know you any better, I would swear that you’re looking for someone in particular.” His eyes glanced up to see Sungmin looking anywhere but at him. With shock written all over his face, Hyukjae quickly jumped upward, grabbing onto Sungmin’s arm to lead him over to a more private area. “Are you insane?” he whispered to the other man. “Are you forgetting what happened with Kyuhyun?”
Jerking his arm out of Hyukjae’s grasp, he moved in closer to Hyukjae. “It’s not like that.” he hissed. “You know I know better than that. I just like dancing for him. That’s all.” He turned on his heels ready to leave but quickly moved back again. “It’s not like you’re so innocent either. What about Lee Donghae?” The second it was out of his mouth, Sungmin regretted it. He hated arguing with him but what Hyukjae noticed in him rattled him.
The look of hurt quickly crossed his face as he moved away from Sungmin.
“Hyung! Hyung, I’m sorry!” Sungmin called out racing right after him to only be stopped then and there by the sudden appearance of sour Manager Kim. The sudden appearance caused his heart to jump up into his throat. He wasn’t sure if it was the surprise or the fear of his conversation with Hyukjae having been overheard. The last thing he wanted to do was to get Hyukjae in trouble. Most especially since he knew nothing had happened even if it was clear both men wanted something to.
“There you are. I’ve been looking for you for the past ten minutes. Where have you been hiding?“ Manger Kim looked at him with an almost suspicious eye. It left Sungmin gaping trying his best to come up with anything he could say but instead he merely looked like a gaping fish. “Never mind that.” he quickly snapped, “You have a private session and he’s been waiting all this time.”
Sungmin quickly bowed, “I’m sorry, Manager Kim. I’ll…”
“Go now!” the man waved him off, grumbling under his breath as he watched Sungmin race off.
~*~*~*~
Stopping at the designated door, Sungmin came to a halt to catch his breath for a moment. Maybe Hyukjae had a point really. Maybe he was avoiding the others tonight. He would really only be biting those hands that fed him if he did that. He needed to honestly give this person his very best and forget about his ‘Jae Hwa‘. That was something he was now determined to do.
As he was ready, Sungmin gave a nod to the guard for him to open the door and allow Sungmin to enter. His smile was bright as he started out, “I’m sorry that I kept you…Jae Hwa-shi!” he quickly caught himself and gave a bit of a bow before the guard ended up reporting him to one of the managers. With the way Sungmin’s luck was going tonight, it would have been Manager Kim. This was insane. That was all there was to it. Sungmin had gone insane somewhere between yesterday and today. He just couldn’t help himself. He had been so sure that he wasn’t here. Yet, here he was before him settled in the center of the room in a plush chocolate brown chair.
When Sungmin looked back up, he could have sworn that there was a slight lift to the corner of his mouth. Could it be? Was that a bit of a smile on his face? Sungmin couldn’t be sure because the moment that he thought he saw it, it was gone again.
“You’re worth the wait.” he heard the other man say, his eyes firmly rooted on Sungmin. “So long as it doesn’t count against my time. You aren’t exactly cheap.”
He was still shocked but it didn’t take him all that long to recover. It was a quick shift back into the confident man that he portrayed. “No, I’m not and here you are. A second night in a row. It makes a man want to know things.” Sungmin didn’t go on and explain but merely walked over to get some music going. “I’m thinking that you want whatever I want again.” he asked with a cocked eyebrow at the other man as he said it just waiting for admission or denial.
Something about the way that the man sat there, Sungmin could see he was fighting the urge to stand up and move over to him. The way that he shifted in the chair told him that much but they both knew that they were being watched. One move toward him and the guard would be called in. It would be well over even before it began. “You’re right.” he simply stated with his eyes practically burning into him. There was such an intensity there and Sungmin loved it.
This time he picked out a faster song, one that he could really give this man something he would remember every detail of. The determination of this was easily seen in his eyes as he moved toward Jae Hwa. He moved in close between the man’s legs as his body moved to the music. His hands moved to rest on the back of the chair, just behind the man. “I didn’t think that you were going to be here tonight.” Sungmin admitted as he moved back into an upright position only to get out of his shirt.
It made Sungmin smile as he turned around, dipping his body down until his ass was pretty much pressed into the other‘s face. Just hearing the sound of Jae Hwa‘s voice changing made him feel like he‘d accomplished something. “Well you did say that the owner would be here tonight, didn’t you?”
As soon as he lost his pants, Sungmin moved into his lap, “I did.” he admitted. His hands moved up over his own body as he watched the reaction in the other man’s eyes. “Is that all you came back tonight for?” Oh he was all too aware of what he was doing right now. He wanted to hear that he came back for him. He wanted to know that this man was just as affected by their last brief encounter as he was. God, help him but he wanted to hear all of that so badly.
It was right there on the tip of the other man’s tongue. Sungmin could see it there but he didn’t say a word back. Merely looked the other man over as Sungmin’s hands moved up over his chest and around to the hair at the back of his head. Disappointment hit him hard but it didn’t deter him. It was better this way after all. Sungmin just had to get this man out of his system. He had to let it go that this was merely just a good lap dance for the man and nothing more. He was here for a business contact and Sungmin just happened to look good to him. He knew that now.
Sungmin simply kept his mouth shut then and moved along with the music. It seemed a little easier to remain professional after that. Before he knew it, their time together was up once more.
As he dressed, Sungmin‘s attention was completely focused on his manager, “He would like to meet Owner Suk-shi. He’s looking for some business guidance.”
“Is that so?” Manager Kim looked from Jae Hwa to Sungmin and back again. “You’re a very lucky man then. Not only was Dong Yul not booked but our Owner doesn’t have another meeting until later in the evening.” Manager Kim shifted to the side, holding out an arm toward the door. “Right this way.”
As Jae Hwa moved, he looked over to Sungmin. He was almost sure that the other man was yet again going to say something but he merely closed his mouth up and followed the manager out of the room. He knew that this was a good thing but that didn’t mean that it didn’t bother Sungmin any less.
Next time something like this had the potential of happening, Sungmin knew that he had to be more cautious.
~*~*~*~
He spent the entirety of his week thinking over every aspect of those two nights detail by detail. He couldn’t imagine what had happened for him to even think that the man he called, Jae Hwa saw him as special. He had made his intentions known that very first night. He saw him like all of the others did. Sungmin was just a pretty face that could provide him with the connection that he sought. Nothing more. Nothing less.
It was over now that he had been able to speak with the club’s owner. Sungmin wouldn’t see him again. He understood that. What he didn’t understand was why he was so bothered by this. He knew what this business was. He knew very well that involvement was something that shouldn’t and couldn’t happen. Hyukjae had been right to call him out on how he was acting. He had merely been a good friend and Sungmin had been an asshole to him. He had to make it up to him somehow.
“Hyukkie?” Sungmin started, wrapping an arm around Hyukjae’s neck from behind. “Do you forgive me yet, Hyukkie?” he batted his eyelashes at the other man in the mirror. It didn’t matter to him that he was interrupting the other man’s pre-opening ritual. All that mattered to Sungmin right now was getting the forgiveness that only his friend could give him. “You know I didn’t really mean it.” he said when he noticed that Hyukjae still wasn’t looking at him.
“Yes, you did.” Hyukjae merely countered as he finally looked up at Sungmin completely serious. “You meant it because we both know that it’s true.” Hyukjae spoke in such a way that it caused Sungmin to feel even worse for what he had said. “I’m quitting, Min.” he stated suddenly. “I can’t keep doing this when I’m only here for him as it is. I’d just…I’ll just find something else.” His eyes averted from Sungmin’s shocked gaze.
“And don’t look at me like that. You and I both know that I’m in love with him.” the other man huffed out as he stood up and out of Sungmin’s hold.
“But…” Sungmin started out not sure where to go with it. He felt like he was losing everyone around here that he cared about these days. First it was Kyuhyun and now it was Hyukjae. “You love to dance.” he said even knowing that it was a rather weak argument.
“I do but I think it’s best this way. Besides, who says I have to give up dancing?” Hyukjae’s hand reached up to ruffle Sungmin’s hair. “Don’t look so sad. It’s not like you’re losing me or anything. We just won’t work together anymore.”
Deep down he knew that what he said was the truth. “Does he know about this?” The moment that Sungmin asked it, he could tell that Donghae definitely did by the smile on Hyukjae’s face. He didn’t need the nod of his head to know that. All Sungmin knew to do was to wrap his arms around him and hug his friend tight. “If he doesn’t treat you right, just remind him that I can and will kick his ass for you, alright?”
It felt good to feel the other man’s laughter as he hugged him tightly.
~*~*~*~
The rest of the night went on much like they normally did, yet something felt hollow in Sungmin’s chest with each set that he danced. It didn’t feel as good as it normally did for him. He didn’t enjoy the attention like he always had. The smile that he always wore was nothing but an act. He didn’t quite understand just what was going on with him but he felt comfortable in blaming it on the sadness of it being Hyukjae’s last night.
It wasn’t until he heard that he had a private session set up that he realized what it was.
Jae Hwa.
This was getting completely ridiculous. He was a grown man for crying out loud. He really shouldn’t be acting like a teenage girl that was all upset over her crush not returning her feelings. Worst of all, he shouldn’t be acting like said teenage girl all too excited about going to a place where she thought that crush would be.
He honestly felt excited as he made his way back to the same backroom that they had first met. The whole walk he worked through his head just what song he was going to dance to tonight for Jae Hwa. He knew just what he was going to do and even knew what he was going to say the moment that the door was opened for him.
Sungmin smiled so brightly as that door did open. “I thought that I wasn’t…” but the words died just as quickly as they came. The man waiting for him wasn’t Jae Hwa. He wasn’t even close to him. Standing before Sungmin was that very man that he had feared it was last week looking for all the world that he had won such a huge prize. It took everything that he had not to bolt. After all, Sungmin was a professional.
~*~*~*~
The days came and went in such a flash. It felt like his mood got decidedly worse now that he was there pretty much alone. They were auditioning a few new guys to take Hyukjae’s place but none of them really seemed to be the right fit.
Tonight they were auditioning some guy by the name of Changmin who looked extremely uncomfortable the whole time. He had to laugh as he watched because there was just no way that this was going to work out. If anyone so much as looked at the boy he glared at them. Sungmin gave him another ten minutes at most before he bolted out the door and didn’t look back.
He was so caught up in the amusement that he didn’t notice a man sliding into the booth just across from where Sungmin stood with his arms crossed. “Never going to work.” he said to himself shaking his head.
“Dong Yul?”
Like second nature, Sungmin turned toward the person that said his stage name ready to see what they wanted so he could turn his attention back toward the new guy. Yet when he turned his head, he wasn’t prepared to see Jae Hwa sitting there looking a bit frantic. It was a bizarre sight since the man always seemed in such control of his emotions.
“Have a drink with me.” he stated more than asked of him. Who was Sungmin to say no? He was obviously feeling like a glutton for punishment when it came to this man. Why though he couldn’t understand. Sure he was good looking but when it came to personality, he never even got one hint of what he was really like other than cold.
Sungmin slid into the seat across from him, smiling only half-heartedly. “I didn’t think you’d be back since you got all the information you wanted.’ At least he was cutting right to the chase. No dancing around the obvious tonight.
“I didn’t think I would be either but I had to see you.” There was that frantic bit coming right back again. It sent up at least half a dozen red flags in Sungmin’s mind but he couldn’t seem to listen to them at the moment. His eyes caught Jae Hwa looking over in the new kid’s direction and when Sungmin looked, it seemed like he was looking back at Jae Hwa with both shock and annoyance.
As the drink Jae Hwa had ordered arrived, Sungmin just couldn‘t seem to be quiet about that whole nonverbal interchange. “Do you know him?” he just had to ask all while trying not to sound a bit jealous about it.
“Do you work the whole night?” Jae Hwa asked without answering Sungmin’s question. It annoyed him quite a bit but he choose to just let it go for now. At least he was talking about him even if his eyes kept cutting over to Changmin. Sungmin desperately wanted to ask what the fuck was going on but he didn’t want to completely ruin what little moment that he had with him.
“Yeah, I do.”
To add more to the weird behavior this seemed to cause Jae Hwa to curse under his breath and look down at his watch. “You need to listen to me and don’t ask me any questions. Just do as I say, OK?” the man’s eyes focused completely on Sungmin’s.
“OK…” he said sounding every bit as wary as he felt. He really wanted to ask him if he was on drugs or something but he had been asked to not ask questions after all.
After throwing back his drink, Jae Hwa moved closer to Sungmin, “I want you to go back to your manager right now. Tell him that you’re sick and you have to leave. Do it right now and wait for me in front of Yongsan. I promise that I’ll explain everything there. It’s going to take me a little while to get there but I promise you, I will be there. Just wait.”
If the warning bells weren’t going off in Sungmin’s head before, now they were blaring and joined by some flashing lights that all led to ‘Danger, danger. You’re in the presences of someone that’s lost his mind.’
Sungmin opened his mouth to say something but was quickly cut off, “Just do it, Dong Yul. Promise me?” he implored.
“OK. I promise.”
“Good.” was all Jae Hwa said before he glanced back one more time at the stage and then quickly made his way out of the club.
“Well that was…” he muttered to himself only to be cut off by Manager Kim.
“What do you think you’re doing sitting around? You’re up next! Go get ready.” the man clearly looked like right now was not the time to be saying that he was feeling unwell and needed to leave. Sungmin would just do this one dance and then he would make his excuses. Just one dance wouldn’t take that long. Jae Hwa did say that it would take him a while to meet him. Yes, he had time for one dance and Sungmin was suddenly feeling the need to dance too.
Picking out his favorite white outfit, Sungmin quickly got dressed and made his way toward the stage. He was determined that he would absolutely give his best performance if this was going to be the only one tonight. He’d pull in the tips now and he wouldn’t even miss the money that he would have made the rest of the evening.
He stepped out onto the stage with complete confidence radiating off of him. Dong Yul was officially back now.
As the lights came up and the music played, Sungmin smiled and charmed his way across the stage. He had barely got his shirt off when several men came racing through the door. He couldn’t see them but he knew that it wasn’t good by the commotion that it had caused. People were running everywhere, yelling along the way. It wasn’t until he heard a gunshot ring out that he knew this wasn’t even close to normal. He may be able to take care of himself against another human being but bullets, he didn’t stand a chance.
Sungmin jumped down off of the stage and crouched down by it hoping that he could at least see what was going on since he would be where the lights didn’t blind his vision. More gun shots broke out and he just knew he had to get out of there quickly. Why in the hell he didn’t listen to Jae Hwa, he didn’t know. Just thinking that had him realizing that Jae Hwa really had been trying to warn him about this.
“Shit…” he muttered out because his eyes still hadn’t adjusted enough for him to know anything of what was going on or even if he could get out the back.
Someone was headed his way, that much he could see. He couldn’t tell if it was someone from the club or one of those that came into the front that caused all hell to break loose. Not knowing what to do, he simply tried to push his body closer to the stage hoping that they wouldn’t see him.
They did.
“I thought I told you to get out of here.” he heard the man say, sounding every bit as annoyed as he was. When he was grabbed up, Sungmin didn’t fight at all. He knew who it was but what he was unprepared for where the letters written across what looked like a bullet proof vest.
“You’re a cop!” Sungmin said with wide eyes as he took in Jae Hwa’s appearance. It all started to make sense to him. Why he had wanted to see the owner and actually meet with him. He wanted to find out when the most opportune time to bust the club would be. He…he used Sungmin. That thought had him actually hitting Jae Hwa. “You bastard! You fucking used me to do what? This?” His eyes were wild with anger as he was carried through the back.
“It’s my job! This is what I’m supposed to do with places like this.” he yelled back just as angry as he finally let Sungmin go. His eyes roamed around the dressing area, grabbing up a hand full of clothing to throw at Sungmin’s chest. “And I told you to get the hell out of here and you’re still here!”
“I wanted to dance one more time. You said it was going to take a while…Why am I even justifying this to you. You’re a cop!” Sungmin got more and more angry as the moments went by. “I was actually upset over the fact that you didn’t even like me. That you didn’t even feel anything but now I know why that is!” his voice raised even as the man opened up the back door to the club.
“Be mad all you like but you still have to get out of here.” he said actually trying to get him out the door all at the same time.
Sungmin stood defiantly, “No!”
“Yunho, what the fuck are you doing? Do you have an idea what the hell they’ll do to you if that catch you letting him go?” Sungmin heard the all too familiar voice of that new guy. One look and he saw him in similar gear only slightly less cop like. “They’ll put you both away.”
“Not if you shut your mouth for two seconds,” Yunho bit back at him. His eyes turned back to him, this time somewhat softer. “Please just go and don’t look back. I promised you that I’d meet you and I will. I’ll explain everything but you have to get out now.”
Something in Sungmin softened when he heard that and actually took in the fact that he was putting his job on the line for him. “Alright but tell me why me? Why are you doing this for me?”
Yunho laughed, “Because I like you, you idiot.” he said before he leaned in to kiss him, pushing him out the door practically at the same time.
He could hear the faint sounds of the two men arguing, mixed in with the chaos still going on. Sungmin was too shocked to do anything but stare at the door for a moment before he actually moved his feet to run down the alley way, praying the whole time that he could make it away and to Yongsan to get the answers that he needed. He knew one thing he had been right about this whole time. Yunho had a gorgeous smile.
