This unexpected occurrence is connected to the still unexplained, initial appearance of the other being that emerged from Orpheus during the first full moon battle. Ten years ago, the Kirijo Group had conducted secretive experiments with Shadows and had learned of the Fall, a prophecy that stated if humans lost the will to live, a being called Nyx, the mother of all Shadows, would descend to Earth and destroy all of humanity. The Kirijo Group also learned that the harbinger of the Fall and Nyx was Death, and thus began experiments to gather numerous Shadow in order to awaken Death. Yet the experiments were halted by a rebel scientist, and Death was forced to split into 13 distinct Shadows bearing an Arcana affiliation, hence the birth of the Dark Hour, Tartarus, and the 12 full moon Shadows. The 13th and last Shadow bore the Death Arcana.
This Shadow engaged in a battle against an anti-Shadow weapon, Aigis. In order to prevent this Shadow from reuniting with its separated parts and thus bring about the Fall, Aigis sealed it within a nearby, young boy who was witnessing the battle. This young boy turned out to be Minato. Having Death sealed within him explained how Minato gained the special power to summon multiple Personas, and revealed the fact that the creature that emerged from Orpheus was actually Death. With Minato harboring Death within him, paired with his arrival to Tatsumi Port Island, the original location of all the Shadow experimentation, and with the defeat of the previous 12 full moon Shadows, the SEES team had inadvertently reunited the Shadows together to bring about the Fall.
Determined to stop the coming of the Fall, SEES formed the Nyx Annihilation Team and ascended to the peak of Tartarus to face Nyx and the Nyx Avatar. The team was able to defeat the Nyx Avatar, but was unable to stop Nyx's descent to Earth. Minato, through the power of the bonds or Social Links he had created with his friends and through the power of the Universe Arcana, is able to ascend toward Nyx and face off in a final confrontation against her. He successfully sealed her away by creating the Great Seal, a seal made of his newly empowered soul, and thus saved Earth and all of humanity through this selfless act.
Minato returned to Earth with all his memories of the Dark Hour, Tartarus, and the final battle in tact unlike the rest of his companions who had their memories of the Dark Hour erased once it disappeared. He managed to stay alive to fulfill his promise to reunite with his SEES teammates on Graduation Day. Once he did see everyone all together, he smiled, closed his eyes, and passed away.
Minato was able to create the miracle of sealing away Nyx not only because of the power he gained through the friendships he forged, but because of his own affiliation with the Fool Arcana. The Fool represents the number zero. It's nothingness, but simultaneously limitless, and thus allowed him to create and harness the ultimate power of Universe Arcana. Essentially, at the start of his new life on Tatsumi Port Island, he had been alone after the tragic loss of his parents in the incident from 10 years ago. But as time passed, he realized the enduring power of friendship and trust as his developed unbreakable bonds between himself and those he met. It was this deep-seated feeling that drove him to sacrifice himself for his friends and for the world.
