There is something heroic in distance running, quite different that anything else I have experienced at least. Tonight, I watched the milers and two milers and half-milers walk along the front stretch down to the starting line, and I kind of felt in awe of what they were about to do. Watching Blake Figgins and Knoll run that mile, with their last lap in 58 seconds, you know that they are out there, killing themselves, giving every last thing they have. I respect that, more than anything else. People consider runners crazy. Maybe they are, but you have to respect people choosing to go through hell like that.
Over the past few years, as I've come to realize that the "heroes" of this world are just regular people, like the rest of us, I still see great runners in a different light. I can't explain it, but I just do. Those guys out there, putting in all those miles, and just running ridiculously fast. It really is quite amazing to see some of these quick times being run.
