Tonight was especially busy at Cozymel's. Everybody's families are in town for Thanksgiving, and they're all going out to eat on the night before the big homemade feast. We're closed on Thanksgiving, so I get tomorrow off.
I served nothing but families today. And I did my best, put my entire soul into the job, because I wouldn't want somebody's holiday gathering to be ruined by an incompetent waiter. My efforts are successful, not so much judging by the tips I make, but by the smiling faces and the upbeat chatter of families spending time together. Time without worries about the big company project deadline approaching, or the final that awaits the student's return from Thanksgiving weekend. Nothing but the family, enjoying their time together, enjoying each other's mere presence.
But my family's not going to be in town. My father won't be here. And this will also be the first Thanksgiving, and in a month, the first Christmas, without Aunt Karen.
For those of you who get to be with your family over the holiday, appreciate the time you spend with them. Because when you look back, you'll remember not the hard times, the arguments, the fights, but the Thanksgiving when Mom dropped the turkey and the cat stole a wing, or when Dad carved the wishbone directly in half.
Savor these moments, because you'll never know when somebody will be gone, and your Thanksgiving will never be the same again.
Ah, it seems the clock on my computer just hit midnight...
Happy Thanksgiving, everybody.
