About 10:30 pm I got the call. A man, a legend, dead amidst his domicile in aspen. No note, no recording nothing but a list of stories and adventures we could only hope to achieve in a life time; let alone read. He lived more in 60 some odd years then many do in the average life time and he live by his creed not that of the land. As seen by one of his most famous quotes. "I wouldn't recommend sex, drugs or insanity for everyone, but they've always worked for me.". Maybe not a Aristotle or Socrates but none the less a man who looked from far outside of the box questing the nature of society its self. Pleading sanity to a doomed generation with witty and cynical articles. His books touched many and his ideals will not be forgotten. The wall fell today on Thompson; on us all leaving only those with true grit, an iron tongue and maybe a hit of blotter acid to carry on. If you never heard of Hunter S. Thompson now is the time, its not about the drugs its about the message. Question everything, never blindly trust your government. "Don’t let those swine give you any guff…" As for that there will be a memorial at my residence some time this weekend and I leave you with a few of my favorite Hunter quotes to live or laugh by. I always fear Thompson was a Rasputin type of character you can drug him, stab him, drowned him and shoot him. But he will still only exit this earth on his own accord and that I guess is what he did. I challenge every one to find the American dream.
"The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over."
"There is nothing more helpless and irresponsible than a man in the depths of an ether binge."
"That's where Time magazine lives . . . way out there on the puzzled, masturbating edge, peering through the keyhole and selling what they see to the big wide world of chamber of commerce voyeurs who support the public prints"
You can turn your back on a person, but never turn your back on a drug, especially when its waving a razor sharp hunting knife in your eye
This is the main advantage of ether: it makes you behave like the village drunkard in some early Irish novel... total loss of all basic motor skills: blurred vision, no balance, numb tounge- severance of all connection between the body and the brain. Which is interesting because you can actually watch yourself behaving in this terrible way, but you can't control it.
We cannot expect people to have respect for law and order until we teach respect to those we have entrusted to enforce those laws.
"We are living in dangerously weird times now. Smart people just shrug and admit they're dazed and confused. The only ones left with any confidence at all are theNew Dumb. It is the beginning of the end of our world as we knew it. Doom is the operative ethic." - Written in the year 2000.
