Changes Part One

David Silva let out a heavy sigh and stared at his reflection in the mirror.
“Well this is as good as it's going to get.”

After doing a final check on his outfit he turned off the light, walked down the stairs and out the door, heading towards Alexis' house. While he made his way towards his best friends house, David began to wonder if their reunion would be awkward. Considering how Alexis had reacted to the news that David would be gone the entire summer because he had been accepted into a Scholars program in Manchester. To say Alexis had reacted negatively would be an understatement, Alexis had been seething. He yelled at David, calling him a nerd, blaming David for ruining his summer and then questioning who he was supposed to hang out with while David was at his nerd camp for months. Finally after he was done ranting Alexis has thrown David out of his house before David could even react properly. David had tried reasoning with Alexis in the days that followed the confrontation but Alexis refused to talk to him, so the day his flight to England was set to take off he taped a short goodbye note onto the front door of Alexis' house hoping it would soothe the hurt Alexis was obviously feeling.

The program turned out to be an amazing experience and David ended up gaining some confidence in himself and started to feel comfortable when he he spoke to others, which had a lot to do with his roommate Adam. When David first meet Adam Johnson he didn't know what to make of him, he had to be intelligent to have been invited to the Program and his parents paid for his tuition out of pocket so David knew that unlike his family Adam's family probably had a decent amount of money. But what stood out most to David was Adam's ability to speak confidently to everyone, he didn't shy away from conversations and was often able to join in and discuss a wide range of topics. David couldn't even speak up in class when he was at school back home, he couldn't imagine speaking as freely as Adam. Although they were different in many aspects Adam had manged to get David to open up after the first week of sharing a small dorm room and eventually David began speaking to Adam about things other than the course work they were covering in the program. Adam and David shared a common love for football, Adam loved Manchester City while David supported Valencia after so many years living there. Adam played for his school team so he had decided early on to organize a league made up of the participants in the program, he even managed to convince David to join his team. It turned out that David was actually a very good player and their team was almost unbeatable when the participants held tournaments during their free time on the weekends. David had loved football since a very young age growing up in the Canary Islands but Alexis didn't play football and he had always been too scared to play with the neighborhood kids in Valencia, much less even think about trying out for his school's football team.

Finally when he reaches the familiar house David sits down on the front steps and waits for Alexis to come rushing out of the house, as usual. After five minutes David looked at his watch and noticed how late it was, if they were going to make it to the bus stop in time they were going to have to run the entire way. David stood up and was tempted to knock on the front door but he knew that would end badly because Alexis' father always worked the night shift and would have just fallen asleep. Letting out an exasperated sigh David decided to run to the bus stop, hoping Alexis would be there waiting for him. When he arrived at the bus stop, just before the drive was about to pull away, David felt disappointed when he realized that Alexis was nowhere to be seen. He had miss Alexis so much, his best friend hadn't even bothered to answer any of his texts or calls, and had ignored the weekly post cards he sent him. David was beginning to worry and think the absolute worst, wondering if Alexis had been ill or injured because then that would explain why he hadn't heard from Alexis since he left Spain. As the bus pulled up the his new campus David took a deep breathe and reminded himself that this year was going to be different. He was in a new school and he had finally gained some much needed confidence. This school year was going to be a good one, he and Alexis were going to be fine.

Still feeling upbeat and almost confident David walked into the new campus and headed towards the freshman lockers which were located directly across from the lockers that belonged to the Juniors. Standing in front of his locker David was busy putting his new textbooks and supplies away, when he was suddenly slammed up against the open locker.

“Hola Mousy.”

David's good mood is immediately shattered as he hears Sergio Ramos' all too familiar voice and feels the boy crowding him further against the lockers in front of what felt like the entire school. David keeps his eyes cast down towards the floor knowing that, as usual, he was helpless in this situation. Sergio yanks the bag from his hands and begins emptying the contents onto the floor. A group of Sergio's friends have gathered around them but David is too scared to even look up. When David's wallet falls out of the bag Sergio is quick to pick it up and David feels like a complete idiot.
Why was he so stupid?! He had put what little money he had into that wallet and had even added some from his emergency cash because he wanted to buy Alexis lunch the first week of school as an apology for his absence over the summer.

He whimpers as Sergio removed the money and whistled.

“Look here guys, Mousy has been kind enough to give me the money I need so I can buy a new game for my PS3.”

The boys around him start to chuckle, some even mumbling “Thanks Mouse.”

“Please, Please no Sergio. You don't understand, that's all the money I have. I...” David whimpers.

Sergio begins to laugh almost uncontrollably and then mocks David in a whiny voice.

“Please...Please... MAN UP SILVA.” he says as he once again slams David back against the lockers, the impact is so hard that David actually falls onto the floor. David tries to stand up but then Sergio kicks him so hard he almost can't breathe.

“Look at me Mousy” Sergio sneers.

David can't look up. He won't look up. He won't let those jerks see the tears that had managed to escape his clenched eyes after Sergio kicked him.
Sergio doesn't like when people disobey him so David really isn't surprised when Sergio starts kicking the the items that had fallen from his bag at him.

“Look up, NOW.” Sergio screams into his ear.

He won't though, he won't give Sergio the satisfaction of seeing him this weak. He sees Sergio bend down and pick up the pack of gum that had fallen from his bag and start to chew a piece, thinking Sergio was going to leave him alone David lets out a small sigh.
But right when he is beginning to calm down Sergio leans forward and blows a bubble right in front of him and then he hears and feels the bubble gum as it pops and the sticky piece finds its way to the side of his face and even a bit of his hair.

He hears Sergio chuckle,
“Looks like the rodent will smell minty today.”

Then the entire group begins to laugh hysterically, as if it were the funniest thing they had ever heard.
David can't remember ever feeling so humiliated in his life, but then he hears it. He thinks he has to be mistaken, but no. He knows that laugh, he could recognize it anywhere.
David finally looks up and his worst fear is confirmed. Standing right next to Sergio, laughing with THEM, laughing at HIM.... is Alexis.
