Really. Smart people with any sense of irony or the limitations of their own intellect always sound sarchastic to other sorts of people.

Yeah, but I'm specifically addressing interactions with friends. A number of them have expressed confusion or bewilderment when I speak these days because they're so used to me being catty or acerbic. Although I may not always succeed, I really am trying to retain my sense of humor without being so vicious.
Perhaps I should issue a disclaimer: "WARNING! Optimist-in-training." ;)
