I saw Coldplay last night with a friend of mine who scored a spare ticket last minute. I have now seen that band 3 times and they never fail to impress me. Honestly, I used to love them muchmore than I do now but, I was surprised to see that they kept their casual performance and quirky indieness, by throwing in a couple Johnny Cash songs and by interupting themselves in the beginning of a song here and there to make a joke.
It wasn't such a remarkable evening as all the other Coldplay shows were. Instead I stood there allowing all the memories flooding back.
An early show back in 2000, when only the music nerds new of Coldplay, in the most creative Canadian city of Montreal. It was one of first of many and many trips to Montreal to see shows. Always the kind where we got high for the concert and all made the best effort to keep everyone awake (especially the driver) during the ride home. The venue was small, no more than 200 crowded the hall and Chris Martin was in clear sight trying to speak French in between sets. They had a grand Piano with his tradmark illuminated yellow globe sitting on top. I was with my first Boyfriend, Ben and another couple, Andrew and Megan. We felt good together being the music-lover foursome of good friends. I remember Ben never liked being touched during concerts....he was concentrating too much on the performance...I admired him and just watched his cute demeanor become entranced.
Then it was Chelmsford, England, summer 2001. A giant 2 day music festival, British bands galore. Ben and I were second row amoung 10,000 folks. David Gray opened and it was still day out when Coldplay arrived, the clear sun set shone glowing light on thie stage...but it felt as though it was their presence that glowed. They were bigger in Britain, but still didn't headline the weekend. my spine tingled the entire weekend. We slept in the lot in a red tent that didn't proof water very well. It rained both nights. We had no sleeping bags, but they sold these seemingly decent down blankets that we bought for the nights. It was muddy and in clingly wet clothes, we huddled during sleep to keep warm. in the morning we realised the blanket came stained with several marks, it was soaked. Our clammy skin picked up the lining that was peeling off the tent. Ben and I laughed at the million red speckles that clung to our faces.....we were rubbing them off of each other all day. I think it's funny that regardless of the uncomfortable situation we still had sex in the morning in that dirty blanket and my bum was completely covered in red speckels afterwards. All we had to drink was yesterdays Strongbow Cider. I suggested trying to pretend it was apple juice and we shared chugging the 2litre bottle before 10am. All I ate was 2 hot dogs that weekend, and that was only to continue my non-eating pattern from the previous month of the trip. Needless to say, I weighed 118Ilbs when we got back to Canada.
I tried to see Coldplay again, when they came to Ottawa....I was in Ottawa the night before, but I was already missing some school and mother didn't approve of staying one night. I was depressed. I watched it on television in Kingston alone and pretended I was there. It felt like I was there, I would have gone alone anyway.
