I just met the woman who is responsible for destroying my academic career. Okay, maybe that's a little harsh... but because of her, and her decision to cancel my section of a required course, I will most likely be forced into an extra semester of school. I went to talk to my advisor today, to see if there was anything we could do. Any course I can ammend, any alternate strategy. I was basically told to suck it up, deal with it, and take it up the tailpipe. Unless I can get into a specific section of a class I never even wanted to take, or if (and this is highly unlikely) I can find a faculty member who will allow me to not only do a directed study with them - but then let me petition for it to count as a skills course and petition for an ammendment... THEN I'll be able to graduate on time.
This is so frustrating. Everything was fine. I was all set to go, and suddenly - by no fault of my own - everything is not fine and I have all this scrambling to do during the busiest time of the school year. It's fan-friggen-tastic, and I kind of want to cry.
I don't understand why the section was even cancelled. It was full? Did the professor just decide he/she was too busy? There was no explaination, other than it "had to be done" and there is "no chance" they'll bring it back.
I asked my advisor if I could possibly take a skills course over the summer. Nay to that. Almost all the summer courses are either courses I've already taken, not skills courses, or skills courses that will not help me in my career. We looked at all the other skills courses that would be helpful to me... and none of them were even offered this year, and won't be until the spring of next. There are several courses (like my capstone, Reporting on the Arts) that are only offered once every 2 years and they fill up in the blink of an eye.
I don't understand the J-school's mindset and approach to scheduling. Almost all classes are strictly M-W or M-W-F. There are two (count 'em) classes on T-Th. This is a really competetive major too. They only accept about 200 applicants into the program per year... and classes are always stuffed to the brim, and fill up in the first few days. I don't understand why they don't hire a couple more professors and offer the classes because people would take them. Students are dying to get into these classes and not be forced into their 5th year of college because of scheduling conflicts and full registrations. They have enough money, they could admit more students... it would be better for everyone. I just. don't. understand.
I have done everything I could. I was an ambitious student. I took at least 17 credits every semester, maintained my 3.8, knocked off most of my gens the first year, followed my track to the letter, and I'm still probably not going to get out in four years. What the hell?
Okay! Enough whining! The good news is... I got in touch with the Marketing coordinator of Pot Belly and I'm going to send her an e-mail full of questions, which she will answer over the weekend. We're planning on meeting in person next week, but I really doubt that'll be necessary. So, I should be able to have an article for Marilyn before next week is over, and I'll even adhere to the topic she assigned (although still begrudgingly)! Having that incomplete over with will take a huge load off my shoulders, I think.
Furthermore, I'm planning on getting my drafting done tonight. All of it. No excuses. DONE. I'll probably be up until 4 a.m. but I don't have class tomorrow so it doesn't matter. I'll get it all recorded, then I'll go in and work on my final video project, and then I won't really have anything to do but finish my editing test and wait for finals... which, hooray?
Luckily, I don't have to worry about finals because I'm getting A's in just about everything (in fact, I think... everything. Ha ha!) I may not be a good student behaviorally, but I get the grades 'cause I got skillz. *smert*
Alright. No more school talk. Now school do. After meme, of course.
