It's fair to say that small venues like the Warehouse rarely receive bands of this magnitude. Last night that band was Envy. People were brought to tears, I kid you not. These guys are the real deal. And as I've predicted in my recent post, they did overcome the language barrier. Honestly, I can say it was really great to see a Japanese band perform here without having to deal with a horde of j-rock fangirls mindlessly rushing the stage just because...well, they're Japanese. People were here for great music and inspiration; not to celebrate their fantasies. I love the DC music scene.
I had a chance to speak with the lead singer last night and translated for my friends as they had many questions as well. "The mid-west sucks", he said. It's really not the place for a band like Envy to tour I suppose. Otherwise, they seemed pretty happy about their 2nd US tour. I gave them a few tips on where to find good Japanese food.
I think many bands have tried their luck with this kind of music, but never came close to the kind of mastery comfortably exhibited by Envy both on media and stage. With the kind of atmospheric soundscape introduced at the initial phase of their set, you'd think it was My Bloody Valentine on stage. Then everything shatters into complete and utter chaos; throes of desperation threaded by calamities of the past; realization, acceptance and finally hope.
For me it was a spiritual experience. I'm thoroughly satisfied.
