I've been following developments in this country for quite some time now. Our company has a few investment projects here and the story has always been the same. Total lack of human rights, detained political activists, child labor, and economic mismanagement. The situation wasn't even on the radar for most Westerners, but the recent tragedy is shedding light on a devastation 20 years in the making. I've donated cash to UNICEF instead of a US agency, since the UN seems to have a better chance of entering the country.
The situation seems hopeless as the military is turtling in their pill boxes. I suppose they concluded that denying foreign assistance and thereby avoid unwanted political intrusion was the way to go. The flip side is that they must now take full responsibility in the humanitarian efforts as well as the subsequent reconstruction. The citizens are already royally pissed from last Sept's crackdown on dissidents. I wonder how much more they can take?
