summer = movies

At least for me. Last year I saw the heck out of Episode 3, but that should be obvious.
Now that this summer has rolled around I can only muster 5 movies that are IMO must-see. There are some notable exceptions, but this is for me, not for you unless you happen to agree.

I'm gonna sort these by date:

6/9
Cars - Pixar is back. Frankly until they screw up I'm just going to have to recommend everything they do. This film looks like it's really coming together and yesterday I popped in the Incredibles and I cannot wait to see if they can actually make this film more pretty than that.

6/30
Superman Returns - Now I don't have X-Men 3 listed because of this very movie. This is what drew Bryan Singer away from that comic book franchise. Frankly it's going to show. Singer is quality, he's passionate as any director when it comes to this kind of material and they aren't trying to rush their film out of the door like Fox is with X-Men. Also I don't really care for the Superman story, he's too bland, but I cannot wait to see Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor. Just watch the trailer and I think you'll agree.

7/7
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - The original was honestly one of the most surprising moments I've ever had at the movies. I've never had so much fun in a theater and been so surprised by a movie. So my expectations are high. This is my movie of the summer, I just think it'll be the best. Hopefully it won't hurt like Back to the Future 2 did by them making this one and the third movie back-to-back. This doesn't look like it though, bigger, badder bad guys with Davy Jones and his incredible looking crew. Plus: Kraken and that scene looks great as well. As long as they know how to keep the mood light when they can and let Johnny Depp do his thing, I just think this one will be the best fun ride of the summer.

A Scanner Darkly - Ok this movie comes out in limited release the same day as Pirates. I don't know when everyone will be able to find it personally, but keep an eye out. First off: Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused, School of Rock) doing a Philip K. Dick novel, whose stories are just great. Secondly: Rotoscoping, which is this crazy looking animation done over the live-action performance. Thirdly: Robert Downey Jr and Woody Harrelson actually playing druggies, behind Keanu Reeves. Looks like it'll be a trip.

8/4
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby - Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, the combo behind Anchorman have reunited. Ferrell's not out making bad rehashes of old ideas and instead is tackling NASCAR. Add in John C. Reilly as his teammate, Sasha Baron Cohen as his rival and Gary Cole as his father. Well I'm gonna be there, this looks like one I'll see in theaters and then can't wait to buy on dvd.

Any other ideas? Comments?
