First there was confusion. A haze that seemed to cloud his brain, vague sensations that didn't seem to want to penetrate said haze.

It was sounds he heard first. Soft beeping, hushed voices. He moved his arm, tried to open his eyes. An involuntary sound that was between a moan and a word left his lips, and immediately he heard his name being said.

"Neal? Neal, you with us?"

Something touched his hand, someone. Warm skin. Too warm. It was too warm. He felt hot, hot underneath something too heavy that was covering him, and he moved his feet in a vain effort to kick away what felt like a thick blanket.

"Neal," the voice urged. "Neal, stop moving around, it's okay."

"Hot," he croaked in a voice that was barely his own.

"Shh, Neal, it's okay. You're in the hospital."

He finally opened his eyes, and there was Peter, his eyes intense with emotion, concern, relief. Neal tried to focus, but the haze wouldn't want to ebb. What had Peter said? Hospital? What?

"Peter," His voice was raspy from disuse.

"Yeah." The tiniest of smiles. "Yeah, it's me."

And that was how Neal knew it would be okay. Eventually.
