Summary: Don just never thought his girlfriend would do that sort of thing.
Authors Note: That’s the best type of Truly....the crying kind. This is following sometime after
Ashes, Ashes 5/5.
"I’m going to bed, you coming?" asked Truly, weaving her fingers through Don’s hair as she leaned over his shoulder, resting her cheek against his as she watched him work. He shook his head and turned to kiss Truly on the corner of the mouth before she could leave. Truly grinned at him. "Bed when you’re done?"
"Might be awhile," said Don sheepishly, Truly shrugged and straightened up.
"I won’t wait up then."
Don sighed as he hear the springs in Truly’s bed squeak, rubbing the bridge of his nose and picking up where he left off. He worked a few more hours before the words started blurring together, which was never good. He stood up and walked into the bathroom, turning on the faucet and splashing water on his face to wake up a bit, looking into the mirror and blinking at his reflection.
"Towel," muttered Don under his breath, looking around. Truly was so unorganized, Don mused to himself, squatting down and opening up the cupboard doors under the sink. He swore softly as a few things fell over, starting a chain reaction and knocking things out of the cabinet.
Shifting through them, Don paused as the back of his hand nudged a leather wrapped... something. He was curious , this thing... it had been hidden behind bottle of lotion, shampoo and hidden in between a couple of hand towels. Obviously, Truly hadn’t wanted it found. Don’s heart pounded just a tiny bit as he unrolled it, swallowing as a syringe, razorblade, tourniquet, and various other things fell out onto the tiles.
"Truly," breathed Don, a hand covering his mouth. He stood up, staring down at the things on the floor. Her things. Truly’s things. Don shook his head and looked out of the bathroom and across the hall into Truly’s bedroom. The lights were off, giving a her pale skin a glow as the florescent lights bled into her room.
Don flicked off the light and walked across the hall into Truly’s room, creeping over to the seat under the windowsill.. He ran his hand through his hair as he sat and watched Truly sleep.
Truly shifted in bed, feeling Don’s eyes on her. She blinked open her eyes and lifted her head off her pillow; her hair was sticking to her face from the static on the pillowcase, and her eyes watered as she tried to focus on Don. She half smiled at him and Don dropped his hands onto his knees, leaning forward seriously.
"Don?" she asked hoarsely. "Babe, what are you doing?"
"We gotta talk, Tru," said Don softly. Truly looked over at the alarm clock on her bedside table and groaned, dropping her head back onto the pillow.
"Too earrrly," she mumbled, curling around herself into a ball and yawning. "Talk in the morning, hon."
"No, Truly. We have to talk now."
"What’s up?" she asked, her voice muffled by her pillow.
"Are you doing heroine, Tru?" Truly didn’t move, Don thought she might have fallen asleep and he stood up, looking around to see if he could see her face. "Truly-"
"What did you do?" whispered Truly clearly. Don opened his mouth to ask her the same question over again, but Truly sat up in bed. She pushed her hair out of her face and looked up at him calmly. "Don, what did you do?"
"Answer my question, Truly," said Don, taking a step forward. Truly didn’t, she shook her head and opened her mouth to deny it. Don held up his hand, bitting the inside of his cheek so he wouldn’t yell at her. "Truly, I’m not an idiot. You’ve been out of it for a long time."
"Don, I have no-"
"I don’t want to hear your bullshit, Truly! I saw your kit in the bathroom," Truly jumped, startled as Don started shouting at her, her mouth hanging open in shock as she stared up at him. Truly closed her mouth after a moment and looked down at her hands, feeling tears well up in her eyes.
"I’m sorry," said Truly softly, bitting her lip as tears beaded down her cheeks. Don nodded and walked out of her room. Truly heard him shift around, but didn’t bother turning around to see what he was doing until the door slammed shut. Truly flinched and tears fell out of her eyes.
She knew he wasn’t going to come back.
