I have no excuse.

Title: I'll come up with one eventually
Genre: Action, drama, urban fantasy
Summary: Kratos is a magical FBI agent. Yuan is a magical burglar. Hijinks and eventual slash will ensue.

“What do you have for us?” Kratos strode in as if he owned the place, like always. In a sense, he did: it was now his crime scene, as the lead detective in the MCU, the newly-formed Magical Crimes Unit of the FBI.

“Some joker broke into the Egyptian wing,” explained the officer on the scene. “Found a frozen lock - nicely worked, actually - and a message on the wall, but it looks like he didn't take anything. Guy was caught on camera and all, but he was wearing a mask. ...Didn't see him leave, either, we think he had a phasing spell prepared.”

Kratos nodded as they moved down the halls to the Egyptian wing. “You've checked all the artifacts for forgery?”

“Haven't had time yet - thought it'd be best to let you experts handle that.”

Another nod. “That's for the best. If he's a black sorcerer, they could be booby-trapped.”

The man paled. “...Didn't even think of that one. Damn, these magic creeps can get you.” A moment later, he paled further still. “Uh, no offense.”

Kratos let it slide. It wasn't exactly an uncommon opinion lately, after all. Besides, there were more important things at hand. “...And I don't suppose these piles of dirt were here the last time you checked?”

He did a double-take, staring at the dirt where artifacts had been not moments ago. “I...I don't understand...”

“Simulacra. Expensive decoys. Whoever this sorcerer is, they know what they're doing.” Kratos raised his voice to call out. “I need the forensic scrying team in here to take samples.”

As the techs entered to open the case and inspect the residue, Kratos turned to the message on the wall.
“...Hmph. He's cocky.”

The text read 'Sorry, no explosive runes today. Better look out next time. - The Renegade'.

“E-explosive runes?” the cop asked nervously.

“Letters that explode when read. I wouldn't worry,” he added, “it's a fictional spell.” Thus far, he added silently. Just because this Renegade hadn't figured out how to make it work yet didn't mean he wouldn't. “I'll have the scrying team check the ink, as well. Was anything else disturbed?”

“Nothing. He only came to this wing, according to the cameras.”

“Hm, I don't like this. Either he's a fool to be so confident, or there's something we're missing. Check the rest of the museum just to be sure. ...Do we know how he got in?”

“Yeah, through the gift shop. The wards aren't as strong there.” The cop shrugged apologetically. “They'll be fixing that as soon as we're clear, I'll bet.”

“Of course.” Kratos scanned the team. Everything was working like clockwork; in an hour or two, they'd have traced the residual magic back to a location.

Why didn't it feel that simple?
