"Hey, is that coin behind your ear? Aw, no, it's a tumor!"

While in the bookstore I browsed Gravitation vol 1 (because I've heard people mention it), The Wallflower vol 1 (because the cover was pretty), and Descendants of Darkness vol 2. I'm not picking up Gravitation again because I can't deal with stories in which ONE MAIN CHARACTER TALKS LIKE THIS 75% OF THE TIME! Yeah, he's a teenager, but it drove me insane. Seriously, there are drugs for his condition. And his crush is an asshole. The Wallflower was fully in the tradition of really literal representations of the characters' overly dramatic emotions. Bleh. And books about "ugly" characters who are only ugly because they don't put any effort into their appearance bug me. There are some honestly ugly people out there who can't be helped by makeup and a haircut. The emphasis on making her pretty being the key to getting her out of her personal darkness drags nails over the chalkboard of my soul. Still, our wallflower has some kickass, murderous moments. As for Descendants of Darkness, I'm still far preferring the anime. Manga Tsuzuki acts like an idiot.

That's my mileage.

Yu-Gi-Oh! was in reruns on Kid's WB this weekend, so it's time for me to dish on last week's, which I enjoyed. Usually the duels bore the crap out of me, but Weevil/Yami and Rex/Joey had a lot of genuine suspense. Interesting to see Yami's dueling skills suffer in Yugi's absence, since so much of the series made Yami seem like the card badass. Also interesting to see his anger getting the best of him as he has his monster continue to beat the crap out of Weevil even after he's won. The show will probably spin it that he's darkened by his exposure to the Seal of Orichalcos and his grief over Yugi's loss, but I'd prefer they don't. Yugi being his conscience and restraint really works for me.

Meanwhile, Joey's big heart continues to appeal to me, and big yay on his dueling skills. The Scapegoats continue to be terribly cute and useful, obviously his analogue for Yugi's Koriboh. It amazes me that people continue to underestimate Joey's chance cards. Relying on luck? No. He hopes on it but expects nothing. If I duelled him, he would scare the hell out of me.

The bit with Red Eyes Black Dragon especially interested me and revealed why Yugi/Yami as one of the dragon savior boys doesn't work for me. Red Eyes Black Dragon is a symbol to Rex of all he's lost, while Red Eyes has become a symbol to Joey as his growing prowess in duel monsters and his friendship with Yugi. Kaiba sees Blue Eyes White Dragon as such an extension of himself that he becomes homicidal if anyone challenges or insults it. Thus, dragons are deeply meaningful to Joey and Kaiba, so it makes sense that they get Critias and Helmos.

Yugi/Yami has used Slifer the Sky Dragon and owned The Winged Dragon of Ra, but they were a means to an end. He played Joey's Red Eyes Black Dragon at points but always with the idea that it was Joey's monster. Maybe that's why I keep feeling that he got Timaeus only because the show is named Yu-Gi-Oh!

Everybody has to watch the Paris Hilton episode of South Park. It killed me. Funny, and even more "so wrong" than usual. They used her actual name! And then there's Butters in a bear costume....

As for last week's Drawn Together, Ling-Ling should have kicked their asses for what they did. Man, Xandir was right there with Toot in the evil. The all-male Spin the Bottle not involving Xandir had its funny moments. Plus, pimp coat! Bleh's secret motive! Pee wee soccer! Toot's equipment! Paired with South Park, it's a full hour of wondering how they get away with doing this stuff.

yami no matsuei, drawn together, manga, yu-gi-oh!
