Back in 1997 I went to a Sisters of Mercy concert in Philadelphia (
I’m the one sitting on the railing with the black umbrella and my natural hair color). It was arranged through Dancing Ferret Productions, and ever since then I’ve received promotional material in the mail from them even though I’ve never went to another concert or bought another thing through them. (The Collide concert on October 31 sounded tempting until I realized that it was a Sunday night. No way I’d be able to go to work the next day.) Recently Dancing Ferret started a gothic/alternative magazine/catalogue,
Asleep By Dawn, that ships out with free sample CDs. I received my third one today. The current free sampler, which I haven’t listened to yet, has songs by bands I like--Skinny Puppy, The Crüxshadows (sometimes), Collide, and Pigface--and bands that I never heard of but will give a shot. Hey, it’s free. The magazine has interviews with Skinny Puppy, Collide, Ministry, KMFDM, and Einstürzende Neubauten and an article on Japanese Goth & Lolita fashion. I’m all bouncy ‘cause it’s cool stuff sent to my house unasked for and free. (I’m all about the dignity.)
It’s not an entirely futile gesture on their part because I’ve bought albums by Pigface, Necromancer, The Crüxshadows, Neuroticfish, and Rhea’s Obsession after seeing and hearing things about ‘em in ABD, just not directly through them. I would have picked up Pigface anyway, but it wasn’t until the first sampler came that I found out they had new music out.
