Someone asked how backwoods my part of Pennsylvania was. The biggest nearby "cities" were Stroudsburg, a 45-minute drive away, and Scranton, roughly ditto. We didn't have a supermarket that was less than a 30-minute drive away until two years after we moved in. We had the Monday after Thanksgiving weekend off for doe hunting season. It became a holiday by necessity ages ago because so many people wouldn't show up for school. Our sports team was the Buckhorns. The girls team was... the Lady Bucks. I often wondered aloud about a team named for a transvestite deer.
From what I've heard, most of my graduating class is living in trailer parks on welfare. They're alcoholic and have kids from several partners.
I went from a borough of New York City to this. The culture shock was staggering.
