Alternate Realities

Finished reading The Two Towers today, and, wow, is the movie different. I like the Ents, Faramir, and the Rohan king better in the book, but for entertainment value the movie strikes me as being better. (Though I hated Gimli's role as humiliation object.) Tolkein is too dry and slow for me, his characters declaim too much, and it annoys the hell out of me that all of this interesting stuff is happening elsewhere and someone tells us about it. How about showing it?

Still, Frodo and Sam? Their love is so pure... and canonical!
