I traveled to Empire Hyundai Friday to test drive some cars I researched from their online inventory, details, Carfax, etc... only to have none of those five cars available for me to drive.
While I was there, he suggested a cheaper Volkswagen white station wagon with 110,000 miles that takes diesel fuel that I had no interest in and then a 46,000-mile Toyota Corolla that was more than I wanted to pay. I did test drive the Corolla but couldn't warm to it: the seat wasn't as comfortable as I wanted and the driving was a bit jerky. For that higher price, I needed to love that car to go for it. I also felt dwarfed by the dashboard. He tried to hard-sell me on the Corolla but I told him I wanted to try more cars first and I needed to see the Carfax. He said no other cars I was interested in were available to be driven and couldn't even identify the cars I'd been interested in with all the many details I wrote down because I didn't think to write down the stock numbers. (Why would I?) He printed up the Corolla's Carfax for me, and it turns out there was an accident in its past that Carfax had no details on aside from the date it happened. No detail about how it was damaged, how badly it was damaged, where on the car it was damaged.... That might or might not be why it wasn't as smooth a drive as I wanted.
He also kept trying to get me to buy a new car. When I told my dad about my time there and how the sales associate did things and talked, my dad was surprised that used car salesmen apparently haven't changed over the decades.
Four of the cars on my original list are still up on Empire's website as available for sale tonight. Wtf. (The Corolla is also still available despite the salesman trying to suggest that if I didn't buy it Friday it might be gone, but I don't want the Corolla.)
Either he'll call me or I'll call him Monday. This time I have the stock numbers ready, and if none of the ones I want to try are available to be driven, I'm not driving the nine miles through traffic to get there. Simple as that.
