I found this to be a very interesting documentary, the milestones in synth music from the '60s to about 1979, though it focuses somewhat more on the UK/Europe side of things because the creator is in the UK: "
Before ‘Are “Friends” Electric?’: How Synth-Pop Became Synth-Pop." (Then again, synth usually is more accepted and popular in the UK and Europe than it is in many parts of the US anyway.) I got to hear about a few pioneers, including some female ones, I hadn't been aware of before.
It starts with Dell Shannon's "Runaway"! Nice to see the Doctor Who theme song and "I Feel Love" get their propers.
The comments section is an interesting read, as commenters wonder why it didn't mention Sparks, Devo, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Hawkwind.... Oh, and the "the Mellotron is not a synth, it's a sampler; what, it's not a sampler" discussion.
Only
indelicateink will have any idea what I'm talking about, but I sometimes feel the urge to write a fic about "
Runner"'s Schuldig called "Are 'Friends' Electric?" I don't have a plot in mind, I'm just a massive nerd.
