Look for what seems out of place

I couldn't really get into reading The Conductors by Nicole Glover for an unusual reason: its paperback cover felt weirdly gritty and very unpleasant for me to hold. The texture just about made my skin crawl, making it impossible to get past that sensation to pay attention to the text. I'd never encountered this before. I'd ordered it through the library's website so I had no idea what I was in for until I went in to pick it up.

My workhorse black jeans I've worn for about six years have sprung holes in embarrassing places, so I had to go clothes shopping, which I hate. Since I'm short, I have to go to stores that have petite sizes actually in their physical location to get an idea of size and fit. (For example, a lot of Target pants and jeans seem to assume women are at least 5"7.) Thus, I trekked to JC Penney during the Labor Days sales earlier this month. I've gone up a size due to pandemic weight but otherwise I like the two pairs of black skinny jeans, one mid-rise (St. John's Bay) and one high-rise (a.n.a.), I bought. They're pitch black and make my legs look sleeker than the slightly tapered straight-leg jeans I've been wearing for years, and I appreciate the front pockets engineered to slenderize instead of stick out.

Of course, they're not what I'd consider true skinny jeans. True skinny jeans are skin-tight and very stretchy and have a piece at the back of the calf you have to zip closed so they cling tight around your ankles.
