Turnaround

While the Stephen A Schwarzman building with the lions, Patience and Fortitude, out front is the famed NYC library, the more "actual library with lots of books for people to take out and places to hang around" building was nearby on 40th Street and Fifth Avenue. It wasn't pretty but it did its job admirably, until it was closed for renovation.

"New York Public Library’s $200 Million Renovation Is Not What You’d Expect"

It's certainly not what I expected. Or wanted.

When I look at the photos of the interior redesign, I can only see wasted space and wasted money. What reader needs or wants an atrium with a 42-foot ceiling? You're not looking at the ceiling when you're doing your library business. Plus, it's a stark white and makes my eyes hurt. The interior mélange is somewhat reminiscent of an Apple store, like so much other renovation work done in the city recently.

It's now called the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library after the guy who contributed $55 million to it.

eta: Finally I get to hear something I care about getting: free rooftop terrace access. However, will remain closed until state guidelines allow it to welcome visitors and who knows when that will be. You can comment here or at the Dreamwidth crosspost.
