Hot Times in the City

Yesterday I took the subway and a bus for the first time since February to see a doctor in Manhattan. While there were fewer people on the train both to and from, on the way back there were still too many people for distancing.

It was the day after Biden announced his vice presidential pick, and some guy was already selling Biden and Harris merchandise on the sidewalk across the street from Trump Tower.

I shot lots of photos of things, but here are a few for now.

A Bloomingdale's-branded "brown bag" face mask in a Bloomingdale's window display. All the mannequins wore face masks of many kinds, many of them studded with rhinestones or crystals.

Chanel birdcage purse, seen in a Chanel window display.

Chanel belt, seen in a Saks Fifth Avenue window display. I continue to be annoyed over how Chanel wants people to wear their name and brand all over the place, and this belt looks so cheap to me. Unusually, these jewelry pieces had tags on them. Maybe people are supposed to scan them with their phones?

Bergdorf Goodman's accommodations during the pandemic. Among their services: same-day delivery to the Hamptons.

Masked Rockefeller Center statue. All the larger statues wore masks. (The smaller Channel Gardens fountain statues didn't.) Stone lions Patience and Fortitude at the Fifth Avenue and East 42nd Street branch of the New York Public Library also wear masks right now.

It turns out that my neighborhood was fairly lucky because some people in New York City just got their power back today, which is about nine days after the storm took it out.

Meals have been more of an adventure lately as I gradually find out what foods didn't go bad from being without refrigeration or freezing for nearly two days without electricity. So far I've had to throw out a bottle of tomato sauce, a box of Trader Joe's chicken soup dumplings, a box of Trader Joe's chicken mini tacos, and a bag of frozen vegetables due to them tasting off and me not wanting to take a chance of getting ill, especially where chicken is concerned.

It's been announced that they won't do the Tribute in Light on 9/11 this year because of COVID-19. I have a tradition of going to see it every year. You can comment here or at the Dreamwidth crosspost.
