In the Wake of the Mistake, Slow to React

Jul 07, 2019 00:46

Tuesday I was getting my change for the gasoline I paid for when a young woman came in very upset, blaming the attendant for her putting diesel in her gasoline-fueled SUV and it refusing to start again as a result. "How was I supposed to know?! That was the only choice!" she says as he and I stare at her with o.O faces. Yes, there are diesel pumps amidst the gas pumps and it might be a bit confusing if you weren't paying attention or reading anything or hadn't noticed they were colored gray unlike all the other pumps but how was this his fault? I parked near a diesel pump as well as a gas but I was paying attention. Him: "I've been working here seven years and I've never seen this happen." It's the first time I've seen it too.

I left the station before I saw what you do with a gas-fueled SUV you've turned into a very heavy paperweight from giving it diesel fuel. Get it towed, I guess. She already did a few things you shouldn't do if you put diesel into a gas car, like putting the keys in the ignition and trying to start the engine (with newer cars, even unlocking the doors starts priming the fuel pump), the fact it wouldn't move at all suggested she put a lot of diesel in, and she didn't look like she had any mechanical expertise.
