My clothing has been getting seriously worn out, so if the retro pay ever comes I need to go shopping. I have been looking around and not finding much I want to actually spend money on even if I had it. Walking down Fifth Avenue showed me that there are clothes out there I like, just that most of them are far too expensive for me.
I also hit Rainbow, far more affordable, while I was in the area and tried some things on, but
I was forcibly shown that their clothing is mostly junior's sizes so I have to go at least a size up. Also, nothing was cut in ways that made sense for me. There was a long sleeved white blouse with a kind of gray, stretchy fake corset that was part of it. It even had all the small metal clasps in front. (So many frickin' little metal clasps....) The medium was an all right size for me in that I could close the clasps, but the cups in the corset piece were too low. It looked wrong and droopy! I kept trying to pull it up at the shoulders but it wouldn't stay. Also, the stretchy corset piece emphasized the parts of me that are most plank-like. I should probably avoid corset-like things from now and then.
There was also a cute version of that shirt that was all white lace above with a gray with pinstripes kind of corset part of it. The small was so tiny that I felt ridiculous. I couldn't come close to getting it fastened. *g* I also remembered then that lace is scratchy.
I tried a sweater in a medium where the sleeve holes were tiny and the shoulders should have been longer, which led to a lot of awkwardness while trying to get it on.
Then tonight I flipped through Bravo and hit a Tim Gunn's Guide to Style in which he and Gretta looked at the wardrobe of a woman who buys somewhat cheaply and wears it until it wears out. It turned out that her family didn't have much money while she was a kid, so she's internalized that type of shopping even though she's making pretty good money now. Tim and Gretta decided that she was "neglecting herself" and made comments about needing a tetanus shot to get through it and that they wouldn't wish those clothes on a homeless person. Because having no extra money for expensive clothes actually means you hate yourself and have the wrong priorities. Way to stay classy.
(Also, she has a long torso and is facing the problems I face with that, so once again they're all "why can't women get everything tailored?" Uhm, lack of money, lack of a tailor for po' person money who knows your problems and gives you intelligent tailoring....)
