"
Historic Midtown Rehearsal Studio Faces Bulldozer"
This dance studio was a place that Broadway performers and movie dancers went to for decades. It's mentioned in Easter Parade, that old movie that has Judy Garland, under it's original name of "Michael's [Studio]." Gregory Hines reproduced it for his movie Taps. Fred Astaire and James Cagney also practiced there. It's still very popular with local performers.
It'll be torn down soon because the whole block is being demolished to put in condos and a hotel. Because what this city needs is more condos and another hotel. It sounds like more money can't save this place because the people who have the land have a vision, and this studio, despite all its history, has no place in it. Rich people: "I love NYC! Let me move in and destroy all the things people move here for!"
