My experience of the police has been incredibly mixed. Since I moved to Chch, I've always found that if you're calm and reasonable with them, they're good. The couple of times I've had to call them, they've been great. And when we've had them called on parties, they've been really reasonable.
And it was police who got me away from my dad when I was little and made sure my mum and I were safe at least for a little while.
But I've also seen some utter shit. Mostly from young cops, dealing with groups of young men. When I was living in Timaru, it was where they sent the guys straight out of the academy to cut their teeth and some of them were arseholes. And given I was a teenage girl then, the whole historic rape case thing only surprised me because other people were surprised.
Sending twenty cops and four dogs to raid an organic garden because their daughter's boyfriend knew Tame Iti does SOUND heavy-handed on the face of it.
Aaand I hope to see you tonight, once Karl's home from work and the kids are fed.
Quite right. I knew one cop in Hornby, when I was younger and used to run into them reasonably often, who was an absolute and genuine arrogant tit. But they're not terribly common.
Hard to say about the garden, I was more thinking of the Save Happy Valley people who were utterly outraged about the cops turning up without a warrant, when the cops didn't actually want to search the house. They don't need a warrant to ask if you've seen someone. And I note that Mr Plod then went away peacefully. They're hardly the LAPD. Though the LAPD actually look a lot better once you realise how few of them there are.
