Real enough if you discount the fact that one couldn't touch them nor could anyone else hear or see them.

I'm leaning more towards an illusion, but despite that it didn't change the fact that they acted and sounded just like how we would picture our respective fathers or father figures.

Probably to make us feel nostalgic about the people we have left behind in our own worlds or make people have mental breakdowns.
