Last.fm and I had a rather serious spat last night, and we have since separated.
Yesterday afternoon, I updated my last.fm software because, well, the automatic updater thing told me to -- nothing unusual. I shut down my computer before going out. When I returned at around 10:30 pm, I went to the basement in order to collect my computer when I found that it had never actually shut down.
Instead, I discovered that I had one of those "This program is not responding" dialogue. The program in question was something called LastFMHelper.exe, something I had never heard of in my life. Thinking this little hiccup to be nothing more than a hiccup, I simply clicked "End now" and largely forget about it. Except this happened again after I tried to shut down my computer after watching Coupling. Naturally, I grew worried. This laptop is supposed to last me through as much of college possible. To have it be crippled and die before I so much as set foot on the Georgetown campus as a student would be, in a word, pathetic.
I ran Ad-Aware, which took ages. The scan found nothing out of the ordinary (just the usual tracking files), and it was thus that I determined that this was all last.fm's fault. When I tried to uninstall it, however, my computer suddenly slowed down and the uninstall wasn't working. Restarted the computer, tried it again, still not working. I tried reinstalling it and, hurrah, look! Computer slows again.
Near 2:00 am or so, I went to my Task Manager and forced this most troublesome application to end, only to head over to my Program Files folder and deleted the last.fm with a sort of vindictive joy. But really, I'm quite sad about being bereft of my last.fm software. :/ I installed the old iTunes plug=in but found that it didn't work -- woe, what else am I supposed to do?
Anyway. These days, I am having quite a bit of fun lounging around and watching Wimbledon (cable television, you are win) for hours at a time. I love, love, love reading
BBC's live commentary ("I noticed a thin scar running up Rafa's spine when he took his top off earlier. I wasn't leering...honestly"), and ROGER! ♥ I'm unbelievably excited for his match with Safin later today. Meanwhile, I think I'll write.
Signing off, V.M. Bell
