I don't often wax philisophical about my being Muslim on this site (or talk about it much for that matter), because that's not what this is for. I talk about it in passing, just because, pssh, I am what I am. That's what
this blog is for.
But! two exciting Muslim and other religion related links to share, just because I'm in the mood.
First of all, I'm getting all ready to attend the wedding of the year (the only wedding I'm invited to this year...next year, I already have two in queue), that of Mark and Sofia. Sofia is my best friend Ayesha's older sister, and I've known her since we were 14 and 15 years old...I actually knew her before I met Ayesha. She's Bengali/Indian and Musilm, Mark's Jewish. When I found out they were engaged, I was already excited to attend their wedding...
It's great, the invitations have Arabic on the top ("In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful"...using Yusuf Ali's Qur'an translation...I should learn Arabic. The only word I know how to read/write is "Allah," haha...anyway, I digress) and Hebrew on the bottom (I am my Beloved's, and my Beloved is mine).
Can you say so frickin' awesome?
They have a website:
markandsofia.com. She looks really short because she's 4'11".
Then, earlier in the week, Jon Stewart had this
funny skit on Fox and their fear of Muslims that showed up on HuffPost. Apparently, people are concerned because mosques are cropping up in their communities, and they're like, "Why?"
And Jon's like, "Uhhh...maybe that's because there are Muslims in your community."
People who are afraid of Muslims (and I'm not mad at them for being afraid...if the only context you know a Muslim is as a terrorist on television, yeah, I'd probably be afraid, too) should probably be more afraid than they think. You look at me. I used to wear a scarf (hah, less than two years), but look at my picture above. I pretty much look regular black, as my ex-roommate would say. My name, Chinyere, is not a "Muslim" name...with good reason, my father is not Muslim! And then, to know that people you sit on the train with, who you shop with, your doctors...random people could be Muslim and you have no idea until all of a sudden mosques are cropping up in your community...oh my gosh, dude!
People need to educate themselves quickly, though, so they're not paralyzed by their fear and ignorance, because Muslims are here to stay...and are actually the opposite of synonymous with terrorists, just as your Christian neighbor is not likely a criminal, or anything of the sort.
Oooh, but that's all. I'm actually trying to do some reading and limit my computer time...but now, it's time to eat, and I was supposed to attempt a two course meal today, but I realize that's an all day affair. I'll save that for a rainy day (tomorrow).
I'm actually going to watch the Emmy's this year, in other news, to see how much Glee takes home and see if Betty White wins hers! I'm excited!
