I'm a fan of this show. Before the show even started, I was fangirling about it as I was a lover of the books (well, the first 5 books or so; Pillars really tested my faith and I still haven't read the last 2-3 books yet :x It's funny only because I was a fan of the first book before the series really started to hit it big)
And then it aired.
It was decent, but just not as impressive as I had hoped. I adored the casting choice for Kahlan, didn't mind the Richard (Craig Horner), and liked Zed's actor tolerably well. I would hit or miss the show as it airs Saturday night and repeats Sunday. I liked watching it but didn't mind if I missed it as I could catch it the next week or just not bother at all.
I enjoyed may of the 3rd to 7th episodes but it still wasn't a must-see show for me. Then episode 8 hit: "Denna" featuring one of the characters I loved from the first book, a Mord Sith. The casting for this role was awesomely done. The series has changed stuff from the books obviously but even these changes were a joy to watch. I'm not sure what happened but the show has picked up in every aspect.
The last 9 episodes have been just great and now LotS is in my "I can't miss this show" category. The chemistry between the leads is spot-on for the chemistry of Richard & Kahlan in the books. Bridget Regan performs so spectacularly as Kahlan; she has the romantic side as well as the tough-protectoress sides down pat. I was unsure about Craig Horner as Richard, but the more I watched, the more I realized how much I enjoyed him. He portrays Richard's kindheartedness and humor very well and the occasional flashes of darkness have been suitably chilling. Craig Parker as Darken Rahl, physically different from the book's decriptions of Rahl, is perfect. He has the callousness and twisted caring that makes this villain so chilling and engaging to watch that I don't mind and even embrace the differences from the book's version.
Overall, I'm so glad to have heard that LotS was picked up for another season. It really has gone a long ways towards replacing the hole that Xena/Hercules left for my TV fantasy category.
