Making Special
Changmin’s staring out the window late at night, eyes focused on the glimmer of lights far out in the distance.
“Need help?” Yunho asks, not wanting to disturb him. Changmin’s busy, from the scrawled hangul littering the paper in front of him. They’re lyrics, from Yunho’s glance. “Your small, cold hands and trembling lips,” Yunho reads, “falling snow,” scrawled in on the side.
“Just thinking,” Changmin mutters, not looking at Yunho.
“You’re still trying to write lyrics?”
“Yeah.”
Yunho sits with Changmin. Changmin twitches and fidgets, shoulders tense and face twisted in upset. Yunho watches in silence for a moment before he brushes a hand along Changmin’s shoulders. “You’re tense. Tired. Go shower.”
“Can’t,” Changmin mutters, fingers digging into the pen. Yunho thinks that the plastic’ll snap any second. “I’m the only one who doesn’t have anything done.”
“Shower,” Yunho coaxes. “We can sit and make special lyrics when you come out.”
*
Changmin stumbles out of the shower with words streaming out of his mouth. “Stars,” he gasps as he streaks past Yunho with only a towel wrapped around his waist, dripping water all over the floor. Soap suds cling to his cheek. “Cassiopeia. Stars that don’t leave the sky.”
Yunho hands him a pen and watches as he scrawls down, water leaving fat wet blotches on the paper, “Just like the star that doesn't leave the dark night sky, we’ll carry this dream forever together with love and trust.”
“That’s beautiful,” Yunho says.
“It’s special,” Changmin manages with a wan smile.
They smile at each other.
The silence is interrupted by Jaejoong’s shriek. “Yah! Changmin! You’re dripping!”
*
“Still working on lyrics?” Yunho asks.
“Junsu finished his,” Changmin said tapping his pen on the paper once, twice, and then three times. His fingers tap the rhythm of Love in the Ice. “I’m still working on mine.”
“Choikang Changmin, hwaiting!” Yoochun calls from another room.
Yunho smiles. “Shim Changmin, hwaiting,” he says. “I know you’ll make a beautiful song.”
Changmin scowls and writes down a few words. “What about this?” he asks, shoving the paper at Yunho.
“The blurry stream of light shines brightly in the darkness,” Yunho reads, and then sings the part for Changmin.
Changmin watches Yunho. “Yeah. I think that’s right,” he manages.
“It’s hope,” Yunho says. “It’s beautiful hope in just those few words.”
*
Changmin folds the ink-stained paper into quarters before he hands it to Yunho. “I’m done,” he says.
“Why are you giving it to me?” Yunho asks.
“See it?”
Yunho opens up the paper. A crease runs along the lyrics, through scribbles covered in white-out. He reads them, the lyrics, words made special by love and hope and caring.
He hands it back to Changmin folded in quarters.
“It’s good,” he says. He wants to hear how it sounds when they sing it. “It’s special.” He can feel Changmin’s heart in the words.
“Want to sing it?” Changmin asks.
Yunho nods. “I’ll go get the others.”
*
And they sing, the five of them, hands in each other’s, singing words until the words become special and the song becomes special.
*
And then, with every word their mouths form and every note they sing, they’re making special.
Together.
