So as soon as I got back from canada I was kind of overwhelmed with trying to finagle my way back into the university. So I've kinda been settling down into school thus that's why this post has taken so long to get up. But without further adu *Simpsons intro music* (tm)
Day one (minus a few hours)
NOTE: my travel experience ahead may be amusing but if you really don't care you might just want to skip this part =P ( I realized I just continued babbling about the flight accommodations so I figured I'd give you fair warning.) (I'll let you know when I get to my actual arrival in Canada)
Well I took probably two of the smallest flights Northwest Airlines (NWA) has to offer for long distances. The first plane was six seats long across but it was made for like chinese people or something my fat american ass was not fitting on this plane. I had to choose between being stuck in the middle of two people of being stuck at the back of the plane,in the isle, great choices no ? So I opted for what would hopefully be more leg room. However I did not take into consideration the fact that the stewart's area was back there. So on a flight that left at 12:30am from LAX I got maybe an hour of sleep. LOL. I was like the swinging door at the saloon each and every flight attendant had to bump me. In their defense I was wearing black pants and the cabin was dark. I sat next to another fairly heafty gentleman who was non to pleased about sitting in the middle. But we got through it, I think it was a bonding experience, even though we didn't speak a word to each other =P .
I want to try to find alternate airlines to NWA, I was not too pleased about their service or their accomidations. Yeah I know I'm tall and them's the breaks sometimes, but I think their crew could have been more attentive and less blazay. Yes I know it was the redeye but someone has to be happy, I mean their at least getting paid for it no ?
So I got to Minneapolis, yay! *expand *
It's a nice airport, very large, i didn't realize how big of a company NWA was. I was amused because I was getting exercize just with the flights to Canada. For instance my plane landed at concourse F I needed to go to concourse A and the number of concourses only goes up to G. whee!
So I chilled, I watched "Ong Bok" (The thai warrior with Tony Jaa! Awesome movie, check it out when you get a chance.) The gate I was leaving out of was tiny! It seated well probably as much as the plane was going to take, still I'm so used to large connected terminals that this was a bit of a surprise
I was sitting on the last seat next to the hallway
The second flight was even smaller. The plane seated all of 24 people, woo! I sat next to a lady, probably canadian, and I'm not sure if I smelled, I mean I had been traveling for about 6 hours by this point, but she had a magazine and she was exhuberantly sniffing the perfume samples within *shrug * strange, sorry 'bout that lady.
No prop planes on this leg of the trip *wipes brow * still those under 30 passenger twin turbos are tiny!
OK SO I MADE IT TO CANADA YOU CAN START READING NOW IF YOU WANT TO =P
and I made it to Canadian soil Eh *Kablam * kinda groggy, didn't really sleep all night.
Filled out my declaration card might have fotgot I had a couple of things and begin dialogue with customs agent.
CA: How are you doing today?
ME: good how are you sir?
CA: Doing good, so Are you homeless?
ME:...?
CA: well you don't have your address on here, you might want to fill that out
Me: *^_^* Oh right
CA: So what are you here for ? Who are you visiting?
Me: Oh I'm just here on vacation *cough *sexycanadianchick *cough * Her name if Phar she wants to disect frogs for a living etc.
CA: Great, well I would let you in except this passport is not valid...
ME: O.O.... ;_;...?
CA: you haven't signed it thus it is not a legal document... you might want to do that
ME: *SIGH OF RELIEF * guh! * wipe brow and scribble name*
CA: *Stamp * Welcome to Canada =)
*facepalm* I always have the worse time getting through borders. I'm not hiding everything but I do have a very guilty conscience
that took about 30 minutes to get through, so I finally pick up my bag, walk to the waiting area where I am promptly pounce by this beautiful Redhead , in a vibrant red jacket? Hey Phar! =D
“Omg you're here! I brought you an energy drink since I'm sure you're sleepy, a toque and some gloves.=DDD” then she muttered, which I didn't quite catch but is sounded something like “... and in case we have a lapse of conversational skills I brought you enough mango gummies to make a trail to my place*^_^*” We hoped in a rather helpful cab who helped me put my bags in his Prius. This Cracked me up, I'm not used to seeing Prius taxis =P
Got to her place, got some exercise ... =D... and then we walked for about 30 minutes to Osborn Village for some Chinese. Mmmmm that was some good chinese food. =9
This was pretty much the theme for the trip =P
Phar is thinking "What did I get myself into ?"
We walked back I did some touristy stuff like taking pictures of the frozen river and everything else around =PCame back to her apartment and I kind of fell asleep, it had been kind of a full day.
There's something I don't see everyday =P
A frozen river? Who'da thunk it ? This is the Assiniboine? I'm not sure
The first in a fun series of pictures at Winnipegian Land marks =D
DAY TWO
So I met the Family (DUN DUN DUN)
Phar's step dad is actually really cool, this helped to ease me in to the rest of the family. Her Grandmother was very nice a little zany, but she was a riot. And her mother, well I see where Phar gets her exhuberance from, she's a firecracker. Very opinionated, very outspoken. I was a bit intimidated but I can always appreciate a strong woman.
We had a nice breakfast of quiche and Meranggggs. Good stuff! =)
So now we had stolen a car, err I mean the family was nice enough to let us use one. So, we went to the forks, not too far from Phar's place, but the car was definitely a plus. The forks was a nice shopping mall with this cool bridge. We also saw fort Gary, that was cool! =) A little piece of Winnipegian History, I always find that kind of stuff interesting. It's not much of fort anymore, but you get the idea.
hockey rinks on the river? I dunno I thought it was cool. This was from a nice lookout point at the forks.
This too was from that nice look out point.
Holding up the fort *rimshot*
mmmm face suckers at the fort =)
This is what Phar thinks of this cool bridge =P
My attempt at an Artsy shot...
...and my reward for it aThankYou =)
The usual winding down process took place, come home, work out on the bed gym, and conk out.
Day Three
Phar was chained to work for the weekend, which was unfortunate, but I think it gave me time to acclamate to the time change.
So she went to work and I slummed around at the apartment. Her kitty is quite the conversationalist. I met phar at work to walk her home. My silly little californian brain thought I could do it in just a sweatshirt and no gloves! Brrr it was only maybe -2 or -3C but still!
Anyhoo we went to go see Doomsday!. LOL It was... amusing, it was not quite what I was expecting, but it had some good moments.
Oh before the movie we went to this restaurant, Earl's, which had amazing food! She says it's like Winnipeg's Fancy Dennys, but I was pretty impressed. I had like sushi and a martini for a pretty reasonable price!
More staying in shape, it was a healthy trip I tell ya, and snoring.
Day Four
More Work for the Zeeb =/ , more Lounging for the Skroo ;P
Picked up the Zeeb in the parent-mobile, and headed to the park for some ice cream? * shakes head* Ok I did it, but I'm still not sure how people eat ice cream in these kind of sub-zero temperatures. It boggled my mind I tell you!
But I digress, Assinboine park was a nice kind of Central park for Winnipeg. Sectioned off places for Sports and ice skating( when it's cold enough), nice buildings, great place to relax or play or whatever you want to do outdoors. I made my usual smart ass comments to Phar and was promptly under fire by a barrage of snow balls. She didn't get be too bad, but I did have snow in my glove, and I got her back later;)
From here I was introduced to (dundundun), the rest of the family. To start off there was a nice appetizer of Baked Bree and white wine. I was able to meet her sister, the Canadian valley girl “Like, Eh!” (who locked herself out of the house earlier in the day =P). Honestly I think she had a better tan than I did. I also met her Bf, Phar's uncle, his three children and wife?
Kind of a quiet evening to start off with. The usual “what's California like?” “Are you cold here?” questions ensued. Then I pigged out on a turkey dinner with all the fixins =9. and Kubasaw? Good stuff, I was full, and a little tipsy =P More conversation while digesting took gran home, then back home to disrupt the neighbors once again =P ... Oh and sleep, right, sleep>.>...<.<
Day Five
Had to get Zeeb's nail fixed, it was half the nail it used to be. The nail place was not quite ready to take her so we hoped over to the mall to peruse for a new shirt. I brought a bunch of long sleeve shirts and I was actually pretty hot most of the time, strange I know.
Aren't they just incredibly cute! ?. This was a small pet shop in the mall. Everyone seems to like this picture for some reason ^_^
Came out to a nice snow storm,
yup, that's me driving through a very snowey Winnipeg. "Real snow" As Phar Says
Finally was able to get zeeb's nail fixed, which took rather longer than expected.
the view from inside the nail salon. ... yikes =P
Before long we were on are way to drop off Gran and Mum and go for a cult like eating experience. =P We went to this place called “Common Ground” which, had real good food,, I had a fish sandwich with a walnut and cranberry salad. The place was small, and woodsy. I guess it's owned by a gentleman who has 3 or 4 wives who actually staff the place, and they all live in the back room. The women did indeed look a bit sedated. To each their own right ? They had a really good peanut butter ball covered in coconut which had chocolate chips in it. Needless to say it was an interesting experience =P.
"Heh heh, what kind of strange drugs did they put inside this stuff ?, will I be the next sex slave for this place?"
Oh yeah, we went to the sex shop where Phar used to work, Hehe. It was pretty big, and it had a very extensive leather section, which was pretty impressive. There were some interesting strokers and the ever popular “clone a body part”, but I resisted. Sure enough there was also the midget and amputee porn videos LO. I don't frequent sex shops, but it is always an experience.
That evening we went to go see “10K BC”, can you say coupon ? =) The movie was about worth the price of the coupon unfortunately .
The movie was just, ok. The visuals were amazing, but arctic area, to Desert to a coastal town with pyramids in 10,000 bc? Then they took mammoths out of their cold climate to work in the hot sun ? ... just O.O... I just kept saying, “Huh?, How would that...?. That doesn't make any sense.” I couldn't help trying to bring some validity where there just was none, so I think it kind of ruined the movie for me. I actually liked Doomsday better.
The evening ended shaking the bed once again, oh yeah, it was awesome ;)
Day 6
This was sleep in naked day=P. So we made some waffles, and bacon. Which were, kind of dry, but mmm mmm maple syrup=). We had to return the car Monday night so we walked around town when we finally put some cloths on =P We went to the local mall, which connected to the other local mall, which connected to the other local mall which connected to the OTHER local mall, you get the picture. It was pretty cool, very convenient for cold weather I'm sure. After that we got some libations of which I got a little tipsy on *facepalm*. Then we went out for some Putin, which is basically fries with gravy and usually cheese curds on top but I had it with mozzarella. It was good food, took us a while to get there and Phar was about to pass out because she needed a restroom really bad, but it was a good adventure =).
I'm like, so high, it's a natural high, and I survived winnipeg
That's right, I have pussy in my lap =P
Oh yeah we had sushi somewhere in the day =P
Say teaaaa
It's everyones' favorite, Putin! =)
Hand model portfolio picture, minus he dork on the left =) (mmm tasty)
(hmm I think I might have mixed up some details between day 5 and 6, but you get the general idea =P)
Day 7: The Last Day =/
Tried not to think about the fact that this was our last day together, which was a pretty depressing thought =/. but the day was good.
To start off we went to the local
art museum. They had an exhibit on Inuit art sculptures which was a lot of fun. There were sculptures of people turning into dolphins, as well as people pooping and as well as a cool Caribou furry which caught Phar's Eye. From there we went to the
revolving restaurant for some calamari and drinks, yum! =) The view at the table was amazing, oh and the view out the window was nice too =). We went back to the house for... something I don't quite remember, probably a quick exercise interlude. =)
It was a great view from the restaurant! =)
More landmark kisses
She's a lush I tell ya! =P
On the way back to her place we his this really awesome public library!
And the last monument picture ;')
Then to some Vietnamese food!, buy they were closed=/ ... so we went to the Mexican restaurant in town, the one and only which wasn't fast food. In retrospect I should have ordered something closer to the Mexican we have here for comparison, but noooo, I decided to be “experimental”. So we had some hot wings and some hot Mexican lasagna, yikes that was a spicy meatball! Like I said I can't really make a comparison to so cal Mexican food, but it was good food regardless. We stopped off at safeway for some cheesecake =9 Let's just say by the time we to sleep we were exhausted but feeling, really, really good ;) .
Oh yeah we went walking really late, and man it was cold. So I had to represent Cali yo =P ... wurd
Day 8: count down to tears.
So we had to psych ourselves into not thinking about the departure too much, but it was hard to do. We got ready, shower, last minute packing, she made me a couple of sandwiches and gave me a coupon for a free doughnut, filled random pockets with gummies, Phar you're awesome babe!, and called for a cab back to the airport. This cab driver did not even get out of the cab, and he had middle eastern music playing the whole time. Once again another amusing cab ride =P.
We got to the airport and... I didn't have a flight to Vancouver?! So we spent some time straightening that out and made the long walk to the security check point. As much as we tried to not sniffle... well *points* She started it! ='P . As always she was prepared though, she broke out the tissues, which made me laugh. It was hard to let her go=/
I made my way to the check point, and, well I got thoroughly searched. I do have a lot of crap in my bag, so the dude checked everything out, commented on all my geek gear and sent me on my way. It's not unusual for Americans to be scrutinized like this in the states, so i didn't think too much of it, but the dude was apologetic =P . I was able to keep my shoes on while going through which was a nice throwback to the pre 9/11 days.
There was a window facing out towards the exit and I tried to catch a glimpse of Phar on her way out, but alas the vibrant red jacket was no where to be found=/ ...
I boarded the small but comfy plane and was on my way out.
The Flights back were -really- nice. The first plane was tiny but I spent the whole time talking to a local Winnipegian actor, who had grown up there and traveled a lot. Except to LA, go figure right =P . It was nice to get a stage actors perspective on things.
The next flight was only an hour to Vancouver from edmunton, and I was able to watch Juno on a small personal screen, which was awesome ! =). The ladies next to me knew each other so didn't really make any new acquaintances, but it was a big comfy plane.
Vancouver was beautiful!.
I was very intrigued by the beach front airport. I had 3 hours to spend there, which is where I wrote most of this entry and ate a great wrap Phar made for me. It was very tasty I appreciated it a lot.
Got through Us customs ok, this time I had to take off my shoes =P
The final leg I watched most of “No country for old men”. I Missed like the Last 20 Mins of it ! Curses it was getting good too. On this leg there was a seat between myself and the gentleman in my row. So plenty of leg room. I definitely recommend flying Canada air, despite the price it is excellent service!
so I got home safe and sound obviously, however I'm still kinda missing something... or someone. I had a great time though =')
Much love everyone, special thanks to my excellent host! Stay tuned for a possible repeat trip, perhaps next year ;)
