But what he doesn't plan for is Lee Sungmin, the most powerful Extra in the world.
Discovering the Universal
Chapter Twenty
Kyuhyun was done.
He was completely done with trying to wait for the Universal. He was tired of Sungmin hiding from him. It had been almost four days since he’d last seen the Universal and he was tired of these feelings inside of him. He was tired of holding back.
The only problem was that Sungmin was still nowhere to be found. Kyuhyun wondered if maybe Sungmin already knew what he was attempting to say and was now avoiding him because he didn’t want to hear with it. The thought depressed him slightly. But he had made up his mind that he wouldn’t let Sungmin get away from him this time.
The Weather Manipulator dumped his books out of his book bag and glared at them as though they were personally hiding the Universal from him. Had Kyuhyun been a Pyrokinetic, all the books lying on his floor would have burst into flame. Then Kyuhyun sighed and fell back on his bed. He stared at the ceiling, knowing that hidden above him was the Unique dorm and possibly Sungmin.
He felt his chest tighten and his heart beat faster as he lay there. He wished he had X-ray vision. Maybe then he could peek into the dorms. But the Uniques had wanted privacy and that meant that they would have covered every invasive Legacy that could possibly intrude on their dorm.
The Weather Manipulator glared at the ceiling. He was done. Enough was enough. Tomorrow he was going to find Sungmin and he was going to make everything clear once and for all. He was tired of the Universal always running. He was tired of the Universal being so damn elusive. He would get Lee Sungmin to listen to him.

Kyuhyun was tense all the next morning. He kept expecting to see the Universal pop up unexpectedly but it never happened. Sungmin never appeared. He didn’t know why he waited so on edge all the time because the Universal had a habit of never meeting expectations and then setting the highest standard.
The next time he saw Sungmin was in Evolution of Diversity. He didn’t know what made him say it or why he suddenly thought it was a good idea to vocalize his thoughts. His mouth worked faster than his brain and by the time he realized he was saying something, it was too late.
“Go out with me,” Kyuhyun whispered in a low voice as Sungmin sat beside him. The Universal started and then gaped at the Weather Extra, stunned into silence.
‘What?” he breathed.
Kyuhyun took a deep breath but plowed forwards. “Go out with me,” he repeated.
The Universal stared at him with an unwavering gaze. A moment of silence passed between the two but the air between them was heavy with an electric pulse. Kyuhyun could feel it and he was willing to be that Sungmin could feel it too.
“After class,” the Unique replied, sounding strained.
Kyuhyun could not wait for class to be over so he could hear Sungmin’s final verdict. When Professor Lim finally wrapped the class up, the Weather Manipulator had nearly combusted from impatience. The students packed their things and went on their way. Kyuhyun waved at Changmin and Kibum to go without him as he had to talk to Sungmin. Once the last of the students had walked out the door, Sungmin whirled to face the ex-magnae with a glare.
“Go out with me,” Kyuhyun said before Sungmin could say anything. The Universal had never looked so angry.
“No, Kyuhyun,” Sungmin said vehemently. “I tolerated you being around me for the project and I tolerated you trying to get closer to me. But I won’t tolerate you asking me out.”
Kyuhyun’s eyes narrowed angrily. “You tolerated me? You enjoy my company,” he snarled.
“I won’t deny that. But people die around me, Kyuhyun. I care enough for you that I don’t want you to share the same fate.”
Kyuhyun interrupted, “How much?”
Sungmin blinked in confusion, “How much what?”
“How much do you care for me?”
Sungmin, ever the candid person, answered honestly, “Too much to allow you to be hurt by me.”
“What if I don’t care about that?” Kyuhyun snapped, his patience at Sungmin’s tenacity wearing thin.
Sungmin looked up at Kyuhyun and the blaze of emotion in his eyes burned right through the Weather Extra.
“Then you’re a fool,” the Universal hissed. “Stay away from me.”
Kyuhyun shook his head. “No, I’m not afraid of you. You can’t harm me.”
“There’s a reason why I never associate with people,” Sungmin said, the fight suddenly going out of him. “If I wanted, I could have all the friends I chose. I mean, I’m a Universal. But ever since I lost my family, I’ve stayed away from anyone I could harm.”
“What do you mean?” Kyuhyun asked in confusion.
“You wanted to know how my parents died. Now I’ll tell you and you’ll understand why I won’t let you be around me like that.”
“What?”
Sungmin sighed, his expression becoming resigned He looked past Kyuhyun and his voice took on a storytelling quality and his gaze became faraway. “When my Legacy Surged for the first time, I wiped out everything within fifty feet of me. That included my mother, my father and my brother. And after, none of my other family members wanted me. Why would they? They wanted to live.”
“Sungmin…” Kyuhyun breathed. No wonder Sungmin had survived what killed the rest of his family. The cataclysm had been the Universal himself.
“My clan sent me to the coldest, most barren place in the world to prevent me from hurting anyone. I spent five years in Siberia, trying to control my Legacy, cursing all the power I had pent up in my body,” Sungmin continued as though Kyuhyun hadn’t said anything. “I lay waste to that place. And even then, I still couldn’t control myself. So they brought me to the IEA in hopes that I could learn to control my Legacy.”
“…You…in…Siberia?” Kyuhyun stammered, still unable to grasp the idea that Sungmin’s own family had been so afraid of him and unwilling to accept him that they’d sent him to a wasteland. Anger filled his heart and he wanted to find every member of Sungmin’s clan that cast him aside and set fire to their houses with a powerful thunderstorm.
Sungmin looked out the window, the fading light of day in his eyes. “It’s hard for me to hear that someone wants me. The only time anyone wants me is for my Legacy. Until this you, I could only call the snow and wind ‘friends’. I’m not telling you this because I want your pity. I’m telling you this so that you understand why I’m-”
The Universal was cut off as Kyuhyun pulled him into a hug. Pressing Sungmin’s face into the crook of his neck, he held tight to the Universal, as if this would wash away all the pain of his abandonment.
“Just give me a chance, Min. Please,” Kyuhyun whispered into Sungmin’s hair. The Universal twisted half-heartedly, trying to get out of the embrace. The Weather Manipulator held tight to him. Something inside of him was leaping for joy at the proximity of the Universal as well as trying to comfort him.
“I can’t,” Sungmin whispered softly.
Kyuhyun felt the presence of the Universal diminish and then he was holding nothing but air. Sungmin was gone.

Two days passed before Kyuhyun saw the Universal again. He had been keeping an eye out for Sungmin, unwilling to let him get away so easily. Luck had been on his side when he’d gone to the library and seen Sungmin entering the Unique Wing. The only ones who could get into the Unique Wing were the Uniques.
Kyuhyun inspected the door, trying to see if there was a way in. There was no way he could pick the lock of the door. He didn’t know how to do those things. But if there was a keyhole, then there had to be a key. And since there was a key, it had to be somewhere. Kyuhyun pondered slightly. The most likely place that key could be was in the hand of the Unique himself. But then why would he need it? He had access already.
Perhaps he kept it in a safe place and that safe place was probably in the Unique dorm. And it would either be in the common room or Sungmin’s room. Both of which he needed to be invited into. Kyuhyun sighed in frustration. He wouldn’t be getting that key anytime soon.
He scratched his neck, annoyed. His fingernails scraped over the chain that he had worn around his neck since he had received it from the Universal. A thought rose in the ex-magnae’s head. He pulled the chain out of his shirt and looked down at the key pendant that rested on it. It was for something, he knew it. He looked at the keyhole in the door. Could this key be used to get into the Universal wing? If there was a key, what if this was it?
Kyuhyun took off the necklace that Sungmin had given him for Christmas and put the key in the lock. It turned. There was a series of musical clicks and the door opened a crack. Kyuhyun’s eyes opened wide in shock. The key Sungmin had given him was for the Unique Wing. It was a symbol of trust. Sungmin trusted him with this key that led the way to a haven of the Uniques.
Kyuhyun pushed the door open and walked in. The Unique Wing was a circular room with bookshelves going all the way up the walls. A fireplace burned with purple flames on the far side and had two comfortable looking red chairs stationed right by it. A soft-looking couch was placed to his left and a row of paintings hung to his right. They were hung underneath a plaque that was too high for Kyuhyun to read. The portrait that the Weather Manipulator could see the easiest was of a very familiar person. Lee Sungmin had been painted into existence here.
Kyuhyun looked around and saw that Sungmin was standing by a bookshelf, holding a large leather-bound volume in his hands. The Weather Extra wasted no time and walked right up behind him.
“Give me a chance, Sungmin,” Kyuhyun said.
The Universal jumped and whirled around. His body crackled with reflexive energy. When he saw it was Kyuhyun, his expression changed to a mix of emotions. He looked exasperated, relieved and fed up all at once.
“Why are you so persistent?!” Sungmin demanded, his voice raised slightly and his eyes blazing with a sharp internal flame.
“You’re my Potential, Sungmin! Don’t you remember that class on Potentials? I can’t think of anything other than you. Every time you touch me, this feeling goes right through me and whenever you’re away from me, I want you by my side again,” Kyuhyun finally burst out.
The Universal’s eyes hardened and his expression became almost aggressive. “No, you have it wrong. I’m a Universal. My Legacy matches with everyone’s because I have everyone’s Legacy.”
There was a splatter as rain began to fall from the sky, running in rivulets down the windowpanes of the Unique Wing. Kyuhyun could barely contain his anger at the thought of Sungmin belonging to everyone. The Universal gaped at the sudden and torrential rainfall.
“You’re lying,” Kyuhyun snarled. “You told me that you only have one Promised.”
“I only have one Promised. But many Extras have me as a Potential,” Sungmin answered, his voice cold.
Kyuhyun’s eyes narrowed. “You told me you cared about me. The only reason you’re pushing me away is so I don’t get hurt,” the Weather Extra declared. He reached out and grabbed Sungmin’s wrist. Hot tingles of pleasure shot from his hand into his spine. “Don’t tell me you don’t feel anything.”
The Universal’s eyes widened and he jerked his arm out of Kyuhyun’s grip. Thunder rumbled slightly in the distance. “Don’t touch me.”
The Weather Manipulator smirked, “You do feel something.”
Sungmin turned pink and looked away, his shoulders slumping in defeat. Finally, he looked back, raised his eyes directly to Kyuhyun’s and breathed a quiet, “You win.”
Kyuhyun faltered, not expecting the sudden admission of defeat. “What?”
“I know. I’ve known for a while. But what you don’t know is that I’m not your Potential. We’re Promiseds, Kyuhyun. You’re the only one,” Sungmin’s voice grew quieter with every word.
“Wait…what? You mean, you knew? You knew the entire time that we were Promiseds and you didn’t say anything?” Kyuhyun demanded. Sungmin nodded, his gaze never wavering.
“I’d hoped that you’d never find out,” the Universal said softly.
“Why would you want that?” Kyuhyun asked, hurt filling his voice.
“You’re a Diverse, Kyuhyun. Uniques are the only ones with Promiseds. It’s almost unheard of to have a Promised that isn’t a Unique. And since you were a Diverse, I hoped that you’d have another Potential. Someone who won’t be a hazard to you. Someone who’s not me,” Sungmin answered.
“You are so stupid,” Kyuhyun hissed. “You aren’t a hazard to me. You protect me. Wasn’t it you that told me how to get my Legacy indoors? Wasn’t it you that helped my Surge? Didn’t you realize that as soon as your Legacy felt my Legacy being drained that it gave it back?”
“The universe cursed you, Kyuhyun!” Sungmin shouted, finally losing his restraint. Overhead, thunder rumbled in the sky. “I’m a Universal! I could kill you if I accidentally thought the wrong thing! I could cripple you, burn you, mute you for life, freeze you into ice! I am not a prize to be won. I’m a curse you should run from.”
Kyuhyun smirked and took a step closer to Sungmin. “If that were true,” he said, his voice low, “then your Legacy wouldn’t have responded to mine. I’m angry so I brought rain. Your Legacy brought thunder.”
Sungmin gaped at him and then looked out the window. Rain beat against the glass and another rumble of thunder groaned overhead.
“I’ve felt this way for a while. I just never realized what it truly was. People told me that you were obsessed over, that I was no different. But I am. I want you. You’re my Potential…my Promised.”
“Yes,” Sungmin murmured. “I told you before. I care too much about you to hurt you.”
“See?” Kyuhyun continued loudly as if the Universal hadn’t spoken. “You know it. You knew before anyone else did and still you push me away. You’re killing me.”
Kyuhyun looked down at the Universal who seemed to be struggling. He took a step nearer and Sungmin’s back hit the library wall. Sungmin looked up and before he could say anything, Kyuhyun leaned down and pressed his mouth against the Universal’s.
Twin bolts of lightning twisted together and struck the ground outside as the two storms merged. The Universal pulled back, gasping slightly but Kyuhyun caught his mouth again, holding Sungmin’s face between his hands gently, pressing him to the wall.
He could feel something burning inside him. He could see it behind his closed eyes. His Legacy stretched and then flickered, beginning to burn with more strength. Sungmin felt so delicate beneath his body but he could feel the power beneath and it excited him.
He buried his face in Sungmin’s neck, breathing deeply, pressing small kisses to the soft skin. The Universal was tantalizing. Kyuhyun could feel his Legacy reaching out for the one it was created for, the other half that was inside the Universal.
“Kyuhyun,” Sungmin whispered faintly, his hands coming up to push at the younger’s shoulders. “Stop. Please.”
The Weather Manipulator paused, trying to slow down his breathing and regain his composure.
“No. This is meant to be, Min. It’s destined. Don’t push me away,” Kyuhyun murmured back, his voice ragged. He reached up and cupped Sungmin’s cheek gently, internally cheering when Sungmin didn’t make any move against it.
The Universal looked down, his face flushing. Kyuhyun tilted his head as he tried to read Sungmin’s expression.
“It’s not that. It’s just…I burned the wall. When you kissed me, my Legacy reacted and I accidentally scorched the wall,” Sungmin said, his voice soft with embarrassment.
Kyuhyun looked behind him and realized that there were burn marks on the wall in the shape of Sungmin’s hands.
“Are you hurt?” the Weather Manipulator asked as he took Sungmin’s hands and inspected his palms.
Sungmin shook his head, “No but I don’t want to push it.”
There was silence for a moment as both the Universal and the Weather Manipulator gazed at each other, uncertain eyes meeting guarded ones.
“Do you accept it now? You have to. You have to, Min. I don’t have another Potential. I don’t want another one. If I’m your Promised then that means I was made for you. You know this. I’m not going anywhere,” Kyuhyun said. His voice cracked slightly and he looked away, blinking back the tears that were suddenly threatening to form. Sungmin could still push him away.
Sungmin gazed up at him, his dark eyes staring deep into the Weather Extra. He reached out hesitantly and took Kyuhyun’s hand into his own. The younger Extra could feel Sungmin tremble and he stroked his thumb over the Universal’s knuckles. The Unique breathed in and a shiver went through his body. Kyuhyun looked at him questioningly.
“Why did you do that?” Sungmin breathed. “Now I won’t be able to deny it.”
Kyuhyun’s breath caught in his throat and he gazed at the Universal who seemed to give off a soft glow. He lowered his head once more and placed a soft kiss on Sungmin’s forehead.
“Don’t deny it,” he whispered. A quiet whisper went through his mind.
I can’t deny my Promised.
