Another Meme Day

I think next time I do one of these, I'm gonna do it in like a week or something.

19. Least favourite plot device employed by way too many books you actually enjoyed otherwise.

Love triangles. Bleh. They can be really compelling when well-written, but I've seen them handled badly so often that the mere mention of one now makes me wary. They're especially omnipresent in YA literature, I've found. Take The House of Night series by P.C. Cast. I stuck with that series considerably longer than I should have, but by the time I quit (six books in, I think?) there had been no less than five different love interests for the teenage main character, most of them overlapping into love triangles and quadrangles and just utter ridiculousness. Then the secondary main character got her OWN love triangle and I just said fuck it. When badly-written Mary Sue-ishness relationship drama starts to eat the plot, I get annoyed.

Perceived love triangles (one party thinking that the other has been unfaithful, etc) don't get on my nerves nearly as bad. I dunno. It just seems more realistic to me that a relationship could be damaged by one person's flaws (jealousy, lack of trust, bad communication) than one person being so wonderful that people can't help but love him/her, and he/she is too sweet and pure and good to just pick one of them. *eyeroll*

Now if you'll excuse me, Price of Freedom just came on my VG soundtrack playlist, and I can't rant when its playing. It's just too sad and pretty.

...Well-written love triangles, though? Well, there's a reason that I have several OT3s, lol.
