What Lawyers Need To Do Before Hiring

Are you one of the 11% of lawyers who suffer from Lack of Talent in growing your practice this year?

We all know the advice summarized from Jim Collins’ influential book Good to Great: Focus on what you’re best at, most passionate about & makes you the most money.

The rest, we need to hand off to our team, partners and vendors. This requires trust.

Trust should always be earned, never blind. Confidence begins with ourselves:

  • interviewing & hiring skills
  • compensation plans & accountability
  • operating procedures & training
  • leadership & team dynamics

Over the past 10 years I’ve hired dozens of assistants - from marketing admins to department managers to CFO’s - and I can tell you a few things about when to hire, how to hire, and what will virtually guarantee success (or failure).

Bottom Line: a well-trained assistant is so much more than just an admin support person and can actually take the lead and build your million dollar law practice right along with you.

Are you ready to hire?

Here’s the first thing you should do before hiring anyone:

  1. Make a list of everything you are either doing and shouldn’t be, or aren’t doing, but need to be. Never hire someone without a clear list - unless you like to gamble.
  2. List EVERYTHING you can think of. Ask your current team, partners, spouse… Make the most exhaustive list you can think of. (Get it all out of your head - for starters.)
  3. Next, clump tasks into categories. This will determine how many positions you need to hire for. Then prioritize which position to hire first by where you’ll get the biggest bang for your buck.

Bookkeeping, marketing and client service are the order we recommend.

(Note: three part-time A-players are better than one full-time B-player who does marginal work.)

In future posts, I’ll share more insights with you about how we’re hiring for our next round of expansion here at New Law Business Model. Feel free to leave your questions in the comments and I’ll be sure to answer them directly.
