Okay, so this was my first foray into the concert world. No mosh pits, not (too many) scary people...just good music, played fucking loud. Went with my roommate, and the cover charge was $25 at Stubb's: a little steeper than I wanted, but at least we got in. Not so lucky with Flogging Molly and Gogol Bordello, who I've heard were kick-ass. That makes me so incredibly sad, but at least I'm going to get to see Man Man on Saturday. If there's one band that I'm going to count on seeing, it's them. Last night made me realize how important it is for me to know at least some of the songs in order to have the best time possible, though. I don't think I'd have as much fun if I don't know the band from jack -- but maybe I'm wrong.
Anyways,
Dresden Dolls were fabulous! Amanda was a lot different live than I expected, and Brian was quite cute. I wish I could have gotten a good, solid picture of Brian (the drummer), but everyone was moving around so much that these pictures are the best I got.
The best part of the show was the cover they did of Sabbath's "War Pigs," which was completely unexpected and the entire reason I want to see bands live. Seriously, War Pigs done with piano & drums and female vocals? Awesome. They also did "Girl Anacronism" and "Coin-operated Boy" along with a few songs from their upcoming album. Most the people I knew there came to hear The Dresden Dolls, which I think is wonderful -- because they were mostly grad students from the music department.
If you guys want some video clips, I got a few. Just short clips...no complete songs...but you get the gist of what it sounded like. I apologize for the shitty bass, but it was quite loud. I'm just glad the end of War Pigs came out audible. Each vid is 2-3MB, a couple minutes long, WMV format.
Coin-Operated Boy War Pigs Today (Friday) I'm going to try and see DMBQ or Dir-en-Grey, but I'm 99.8% sure that Diru is an industry-only show, so no public tickets. I also wanted to go see "A Headbanger's Journey: The History of Metal" since it's having it's US Premeire here, but you have to have a film badge to get in. No single tickets available. SUCK. I guess I'll just have to rent it when it comes out on DVD in May.
Saturday I'm trying to see the day-shows for DMBQ (in case Friday falls through), Man Man and The Duke Spirit.
