Advice please. :-)

I'm after some advice regarding effects pedals for electric violins... Basically, I'm looking for something pretty basic, little more than an EQ pedal really, but if it did simple effects like reverb and compression that would be a bonus. Are there specific pedals made for violins, or do I need to buy a guitar pedal? And does anybody have any ( Read more... )

Sounds like, regardless of what else you do regarding a pre or effects or whatever, you *need* an amp that you can use as a monitor on-stage. As someone recommended above, the Baggs Para Acoustic D.I. should take care of most of the more-immediate sound-quality issues you're having, but not being able to hear yourself on-stage is Not a Good Thing.

I don't know what your budget might be, but both the Crate Gunnison (CA6110DG) and Roland AC-60 are relatively inexpensive (generally around $399USD for the Crate, and about a hundred more for the Roland), and have a number of features that make them attractive to electric violinists. Both have circuitry to allow you to select whether the input instrument is using magnetic or piezo pickups; that alone will make an electric violin sound better, as nearly every bit of equipment on the planet is designed primarily for magnetic pickups only.

I haven't heard the Gunnison yet, but I have played a Fender through the Roland AC-60, and was quite impressed (shocked, frankly) at how much better it sounded than I was expecting. The Roland has a built-in kickstand to angle it up for use as a monitor, or alternately is stand mountable on a fairly standard speaker stand (not included). It also comes with a high-quality gig bag. It's a good bit lighter than the Crate as well -- the Roland is about 20 lbs, vs. 37! for the Gunnison.
