Hello there. Just found this community. Have been a violinist for about 23 years on and off. After leaving university I didn't play for a couple of years, then I started again for a bit and then hit a wall about 18 months ago. Have just bought myself an electric violin and amp (and effects pedal) in an attempt to get my playing kick started again. My question is, do you guys tend to play by ear or use sheet music? Because it was all classical music when I was learning I've always been a sheet-music kind of player. I can play by ear and have worked out bits and pieces in the past that I like. But I've been on the lookout for some fresh stuff to play and am finding it hard. I tried some guitar tab music (Red Hot Chilli Peppers) which is ok. What I'm really after is some decent folk music. Example - the violin playing on some of Nick Cave's music. Sort of a dark, gothic folk. I worked out the part to West Country Girl and if I feed that through the amp with some echo it sounds fantastically eeire. But I need more. Any suggestions on where I can get hold of decent sheet music, and what kind of stuff I might like?
