dreaded intro post

i'm new here. i'm a classical guitarist/multi-instrumentalist. i currently don't own a violin, but i do work with fretless instruments tuned in 5ths pretty often, so yeah...
this seemed like a good community to post questions about effects, namely delays. i have a boss pitch shifter/delay that won't shift up anymore. the knob for pitch goes down on both sides, but the rise side drops it a tri-tone instead of down an octave like the down side. i'm scared to take it to a music shop, cuz i only paid $30 for it(a music shoppe had a box of effects that they knew nothing about, and i offered 30 for it, haha.), and i don't want to spend a whole lot to get it fixed... also, i'm very broke right now. i use it as just a delay usually, cuz it's got one of the longest delay times of anything i own, so i don't want to risk going without it for months and months while they're looking for a part or something. that would suck.
so yeah, does anyone here do their own repairs, or build effect? i've built a distortion pedal, but this is definitely not a simple little stomp box...
