Rewind about 8 1/2 years
I'm about nine years old. I had played violin for about 1 1/2 years total. I was involved in the Mt. Baker Sinfonette for a couple months when the higher powers that be informed me that I was "too advanced" for the beginning group, so I'd have to move up to the Junior Symphony. I remember the night. I was beside myself with excitement. I was placed in the back of the second violin section of the combined Junior and Youth symphonies.
They were rehearsing the Sibelius Symphony no. 2 in D Major, fourth movement. I was nine, and very inspired.
Fastforward about 8 1/2 years from that event
I'm now 18 years old, a senior in high school. After the angst of waiting for All-Northwest results for two months, the verdict was in: I made it. One of the top 50-ish high school violinists in Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Wyoming, and Idaho. After waiting another month and a half for the music to finally arrive, I pulled out the pieces we're playing.
We're playing the Sibelius Symphony no. 2 in D Major. I am eighteen, and very nostalgic.
Here we are, two bookend events. My very first exposure to symphonic literature ever, and my very last exposure to symphonic literature before moving on to bigger and better things at Whitman College.
