this weekend

This weekend was the student union retreat for the representatives. Being the representative for the Myles Standish Hall, I had to go. I had no idea what to expect seeing as the retreat was at the sargent activities center. When I got there, I had my keys and phone confiscated. I was in a room with few people that I knew. We started out with some ice breaker games, which i loath with a passion, but i suppose they are necessary. We listened to a lot of presentations about leadership and what it takes to be a leader. That would be expected of a government retreat since we are all leaders. In the 24 hour period, the 25 or so of us got to know each other on another level. We shared info about each other that no one else knows. We also played a spiffy game by no other name then Mafia. We stayed up until 3am in the morning playing games and just having philosophical talks about sex (go figure). On Saturday, we went over what we liked about bu and what we loathed about BU. After this, we were able to form committees to address issues about the University. I, myself, decided to work on the Academic affairs committee. I'm very excited to work with the provost to make some changes. We plan on trying the put the syllabi, textbooks, and course reviews online for all students to see. This will be beneficial for students planning their courses and for the bookstore, so they can buy more used books and save students money. We also want to tackle the issue of teaching fellows who speak little to no english. Since these TFs are instucting intro level courses, it is essential that student actually have a good platform to work with. If there is a policy set in place to ensure that all TFs can converse in english, it appparently isn't working very well. Our last goal is to tackle the issue of grade deflation, which is apparently a rumor. We need to make it clear to the provost that he needs to publicly address the deflation issue. When alumni talk about their BU experience, grade deflation does not want to be included in their account of their college years. I believe these three goals to be very attainable and I am very excited about the possible changes that could and hopefully will occur. The retreat ended with the group sharing their happiest and their saddest moments. By the end of the circle, most of us (myself included) were in tears. We had gotten to know each other well enough to share moments in our lives that few people know about. I didn't think this was possible after meeting people only 24 hours, but it was absolutely amazing. As Jonah put it, the Student Union is now a part of my extended family and it really makes sense. I facebooked as many people as I could from the retreat and I hope my friendships develop with each and every one of them. It's weekends like this one that make me thankful that I chose to come to BU instead of UNH. I love the people at BU and this weekend just cements it.

On another note, I was checking my email today and I found an email comment in my inbox. This comment was very unneeded about an earlier entry about the superbowl game. Although annoymous, it was still very hurtful when you (whoever you are) call me a bitch and continue to tell me how no one cares about my entries. Well, I tell you this, this journal is not for anyone's interest but mine alone. Now, I choose to let other read my journal mainly because I don't really care who reads my thoughts and if my thoughts are private, than i make the entry private. However, I most taken aback that someone would comment annonymously in my journal and call me a bitch. If you are going to call me a bitch in something as impersonal as a livejournal account, not to mention 4 months after I wrote the entry, at least reveal yourself. I probably won't even care what you think. I have my friends that accept me for who i am and I don't need you to be my friend and call me a bitch behind my back. Thanks!

On that note, I have some work to do since all I did was work on student government activities all weekend. Tata!
