The day that
audity and I moved here we drove directly from a hotel in Ohio to B-ton without anything to eat. Encore was closed and we couldn't get into our new apartment for more than an hour and we were starving. So, someone at the Encore suggested that we try Neannie's around the corner.
It was pricey but the simple food (soup, salad, sandwich) was amazing and we shared a little cup of gelato that we picked from almost 20 flavors. That was 4yrs ago but I've been back many times since, mainly drawn by the lure of their Maple Balsamic Dressing- a sweet salad dressing so thick that it had to be scraped with a spoon out of it's little ceramic ramekin and onto your salad covered in slivered almonds and local roma tomatoes. They made their own bread and I always had more food than I could eat.
I knew that Neannie's had been bought and taken over by one of their waitresses and I was happy about it, it's nice to see a woman run a small local business.
I don't go to Neannie's very often because it's so pricey, but
beatnik and I went today as a Friday lunch treat.
My lunch was $8.50:
- The salad was lettuce and some grated cheese. Nothing else- the old salads had tomatoes, almonds, onions.
- The salad dressing was clearly premade, I suspect it was Annie's brand. It was thin and watery and came in a plastic container- just like what you'd get at TGI Friday's. Gone was my favorite thick maple dressing.
- The sandwich was on Pepperidge Farm bread- 1 slice total cut in half, they didn't even bother to cut it on the diagonal. It had nothing but lettuce and cheese spread and they hadn't toasted it. When I took it up and asked for it to be cooked in the paninni press they brought it back out and it had some grooves in it. It wasn't hot or toasted. Gone was the homemade bread.
- The basked was topped off with a scant handful of generic ridged potato chips.
Again, that tiny amount of food was $8.50, none of it was homemade, and I'm still hungry.
I feel twice cheated- not only am I out almost $10.00 for about $2.00 worth of food, but I've also lost one of my favorite local restaurants.
Oh, and they only sell 2 flavors of premade gelato now.
Don't go there. It's crap.
