this is so painful and full of angst but i love reading it. i like hearing brian's inner thoughts as well as justin's...even if i know they can rationalize incredibly well. i always want to hope that they will fight and claw their way to each other, regardless of physical distance. your last line..."without preamble, he said, "come over." gives me the hope i need!!!!

Thanks! I'm glad you're liking it. For some reason, the readers are all feeling the angst much more than I am when I'm writing it. To me, even when Brian is hurt, he still exudes this quality of being able to endure anything, and knowing that it'll all come out fine in the end. As for Justin, I just like seeing him become his own person, which they didn't demonstrate to well on the show, IMO. So, I guess that's my goal with this story. To see each of them come into their own, and be able to have a relationship that's appropriate for both of their needs and wants. Once again, they never did get there on the show.

Exactly. I like to see how you allow both of them to be contradictory about their wants and needs. Justin is in a place where he's trying to find out what he wants, and yes, this includes whether he wants Brian or not. Brian has been doing that throughout the show and at the start of this fiction he continues to do so by pushing Justin away, yet again. Only when he's aware that he might have truly lost Justin, Brian finally finds the balls to do something about it. But for once Justin is not ready.

I am slightly concerned for James, though, whom I really like. He seems to be taking everything in his stride: is he really that self-possessed or is he just hiding his own conflict very well?

I'm glad you're seeing it that way, too!

As for James, I really feel like the Sawyer we know and love on Lost is really a carefree kind of a guy most of the time, and Josh Holloway seems to be even more so, in that vain. I'm afraid I've made James a little too sweet, but that's how I see him come across on the show when he's not doing fucked up things to get people to hate him. I guess I figure, after enduring the Dharma Island, he'd probably be all "Whatevz" and take life in stride. I think he likes to have a good time, but doesn't want to be tied down, and really just wants Justin to be happy. I don't think of him as a character who HAS to be with someone. J & B, however... I think they do.
