basically built her an organic heart. That’s not new tech, but it’s perfected tech. But here’s the difference, and why we are being paranoid, “ Thomas took a deep breath.

“The medical section of the Tower has been experimenting with nano technology. Computer and medical scientists have been working for decades trying to build a working, minute robots to release into the body to cure disease. The Towers actually have worked to together on this and have finally been able to build nanites on a practical scale. But the thing is, they are already going beyond healing, they are aiming for longevity. I’m talking centuries, here.”

Sam’s forehead wrinkled. “So, Amanda, she has these nanites in her body?” he asked.

“Yes,” replied Thomas. “But here’s the thing. They almost have stuff like organ replacements and cancer eradication down. Amanda’s surgery wasn’t as experimental as we thought. The scientists will be rolling out nanotech for the general populous, but it will not be as good as what they are keeping for themselves.”

“Edwin was able to get Amanda the good stuff. The nanites that heal and lengthen her life span.” added Madeline.

“Can he get these nanites for his sister in law? Or does he still have his head up his ass?” Sam snorted.

Jory smirked. “I think we can arrange it. Eddie, uh, Edwin doesn’t realize it, but when he shattered the ‘holy sacred laws’ of a Tower, he changed. He’s still a hard ass, but I think we can talk him into it for Maggie’s sake.”

“What do the sub standard nanites do?” asked Amanda from the entryway to the living room. Miriam was by her side.

Sam laughed. “I expected you two earlier. Who won?”

Miriam shrugged. “We forgot to keep playing.”

Thomas looked up at the girls. “Com’ere, Amanda.”

Jory started, “Watch..!” while Amanda ran up and launched herself at her honorary uncle.

“Here!” she yelped.

“Umph! Both of you kids, you never do anything half way, eh?” Thomas chuckled.

Amanda scooted off Thomas and sat beside him on the couch. She skipped his rhetorical question and simply gave her attention and said, “Okay.”

Madeline, on the other side of Amanda, took point this time. “The regular nanites that the Tower has been healing people with do that, heal them. No longevity.

“But both kinds of nanites counteract the effects of the contamintation their experiments and their matter manipultation cause.”

Thomas continued. “And they will be slowly working the nanites into the general population. Right now it’s the sickest that are getting these treatments. Soon all the hospitals will be administrating nanites when people go to the doctor for whatever ailment or for vaccinations.”

“Okay, “ started Sam. “So is the Tower doing to announce this wonderful breakthrough in health technology or are they going to hide it to hide their screwing with nature?”

Miriam had sat on the floor by her dad’s chair. “Screw seems to be the word of the day.” she comented.

Sam reached down to muss her hair. Miriam’s hair was so pretty, so blonde, it matched Maggie’s locks so closely, he couldn’t help it. It hurt sometimes, seeing her so healthy when Maggie should be combing and braiding and fussing with Miriam’s hair.

His hand stopped a couple of inches by her head. Miriam, of course, had already leaned over to avoid the mussing. It was one of their many games. Miriam’s hair seemed blonder than usual, if that was even possible.

“Come here with your head, “ he said to her.

“Hard for me to come without it, “ Miriam retorted but moved her head back.

Sam peered at her hair. The others looked quizzically at them both. He pulled out her hair band to let her hair flow freely. Starting at her forehead, he slowly moved his hand through her hair. He stopped and pulled out a few strands from the rest.

“Are these hairs just really really blonde, or are they white?”

Madeline got up, crouched on the floor and took the hair strands from Sam. “Hold still a minute, honey.” She followed the strands back to the scalp and continued looking though her hair.

Miriam suppressed her squirms. “Tickles, people!” But she looked concerned, not knowing what they were looking at or for.

“Is Maggie’s hair this fair?” asked Madeline.

“No. Well, lately, she has been getting more gray hair, well it’s white, isn’t it, really?” He babbled a bit. “But I didn’t think anything of it, just thought she was getting older or it was because she has been so sick. You can hardly tell, her hair is so blonde anyway.”

Jory now stood over Miriam and looked. “Amanda had some white hairs too, before the surgery. You could really see them, though, because of her dark hair. I thought it was just because of her heart.”

“Does she still have the white hair?” asked Thomas. Amanda leaned over to allow Thomas to inspect her hair.
