"We cannot defend freedom abroad while deserting it at home."

Huh. So maybe I will like the new Harry Potter movie, after all. I thought the first two were deeply, deeply silly, and the the third was visually pretty but poorly scripted. So that review, from a critic who seems to have had the same problems with the first three that I did, intrigues me.

My pick for Best Holiday Viewing, though, remains Good Night, and Good Luck. It's timely, topical, tightly-focused and extremely well-acted. The film is shot in black-and-white, with gorgeous, moody shots in closed rooms filled with spirals of cigarette smoke, and the black-and-white news footage from the era is included seamlessly. Of course, I'm also a huge Edward R. Murrow fan, so that doesn't hurt.

And, on a mostly unrelated note, I signed up for 100_women, a community with 100 prompts for stories about female characters. I'm mostly going to be recycling some of my old stuff, but I might write a few new pieces. I highly recommend that everyone check it out. It's a cool idea.

good night and good luck, opinions, movies, ed murrow
