Swine flu. What bullshit. Luckily I was on holiday last week, so I didn't get the reports in the media until the hype was over. 1000 cases, 20 dead and that's newsworthy and people should panic? Please

My guess is that the respective monitoring agencies (CDC Atlanta?) noticed that the virus was jumping (from pig to man), the press got wind of it and by the time it was clear how dangerous (or harmless) it really was, it was too late, the press had already created the hype.

OK, the virus was jumping from pig to man. So what? Are pigs flying around the world and infect all the humans on their way? There are one thousand cases in Mexico, the mortally is rather low for a flu. That's not even an epidemic, that's next to nothing.
I doubt Michael Moore and his methods very much, but I think his main point in Bowling for Colombine that the media is constantly trying to scare people is not so far of. Bird flu, swine flu, black holes at CERN and it's all bullshit.

That's why I reduce my media consumption to derStandard.at and news.bbc.co.uk.
