We Were Made For Each Other
We will have to say that there are three of you. We have to say that because it is fact, and all three of you do not expect anything else. There's Daniel, who is on an island, separated from the rest of the world, hiding his abilities with physics and maybe it's better off that way. Because then there's another Daniel, a musician, who just wants to feel his fingers gently glide over the piano's keys once more but his hands, they keep on clenching, and he can't focus, because he feels that they should be wrapped around a pen and working, working so intently that he forgets to breathe. And then there's Daniel, who doesn't breathe. He's inside Daniel's head. Everyone thinks he's crazy, and because of this, no one would expect that he has all the answers.

*

There's Daniel, Daniel, and Daniel, but only one should exist. You have to choose, Daniel. You can't keep living this way, split up in threes, positioned in different parts of the world. The world doesn't work that way, not for physicians like you or musicians like you or whatever you are. You cannot use mere lab rats and detonate bombs at the same time. You cannot play a show and listen to anything interrupt the flow of your music at the same time. And you definitely cannot be writing music and complex math equations interchangeably. You must choose, because this is not how the world works. Everything is supposed to happen for a reason. Everything is supposed to happen without you know that everything is happening.

*

The Daniel inside Daniel's head, he's seeing things. He is always seeing things but this time, he thinks it's real. He's seeing a deep, deep red, so close to blood but it's anything but blood, really, and he's seeing an icy blue that's sharp enough to break the skin, but refuses to do so. There's soft skin. Soft pink lips. And suddenly he doesn't think he's inside anyone's head anymore and when he finally comes to this revelation he sees nothing. He panics, but there's nowhere to run. He's in a coffin. Always, always in a coffin and the lid is nailed shut. And he's not underground, and perhaps that's what scares him the most, because why why why won't the light come back? Daniel blocked it out permanently. That's why. It's only in your head. Bow down or be damned.

*

One day Daniel sees that girl. It's not quite that girl, because she's too young and she looks too innocent, swinging on the swingset like the child that she is. And you're not sure if you fully understand why it's not the same girl, and you think you've hurt her, and that you will hurt her more if you approach her, but you're so close to her that you don't care. It's too late to turn back now. And Daniel, he says what he needs to say. He wants her to leave and he doesn't know why. Where are you going, little girl? Please don't run away from me. Don't look at me like that. I'm not in pain. Not really. I don't want to lie. But for what it's worth, it doesn't hurt, don't cry.

*

He's losing his mind, you know. It's you who's losing your mind, Daniel. Don't let him run away and we'll be all right. Pretty soon I'll be losing you, too, won't I? No, I don't think that's going to happen. Why not? I can't go anywhere. Perhaps you're right. But I can. That doesn't mean anything. I'll still be here. Okay. Sure. Okay, then. What year is it, anyway? You memorize all of these different equations and numbers but you can't remember what year it is? I just want you to tell me what year it is. Can you do that for me, Daniel? It's 1977. I don't think that's right. I think you're lying, Daniel.

*

One day Daniel's on the stage and he thinks he sees that girl but he's not sure. He's playing the piano, auditioning for something, he forgets what. And so he freezes, and the music stops abruptly, and the room is silent for a few moments before there are troubled voices echoing throughout the room, not bothering to be quiet. Someone asks what's wrong with him. It's the girl. Or it's a girl that he thinks is the girl. And he stares at her, and she stares back, worried, confused, and he doesn't want to disappoint her, whoever she is. Forget the rest. He continues to play, but he messes up too many times and he doesn't get the part.

*

And one day, Daniel disappears and then there's just Daniel and Daniel. One of the remaining Daniels is half dead. Daniel the physician simply disappears and the Daniel inside his head is the only one who can explain why, but he's lost his voice. He can't say that he's sorry to the cause of his death. A girl. A woman. His own mother. Is this how it's supposed to be? Is it always supposed to be love and women who ruin everything in the end? He wants to ask. He wants to say that he doesn't think this is how the world works. And how would he prove this? He wouldn't. It's not rocket science. But he's dead and he's dying and he can't speak and the other Daniel just stares and watches, feeling more alive than ever.

*

The Daniel inside Daniel's head has to die, too. Without a voice, he's nothing. There is one chance of survival, though. There's always a chance. Not everyone sees this, but Daniel can. But this chance relies upon the other remaining Daniel, who has to make a choice. This Daniel knows about this dire situation, but not enough. Who is this physician with the alter ego, anyway? It's him. But he can't believe that. The other Daniel looks down on him with anticipation in fear. The choice is: life or death? Save me. God, Daniel, don't you hear me? Save me. I tried to save everyone. I did save everyone... everyone except for the girl. I'm so sorry. But I can make it up to you, I swear I can, and so I'm begging you to not forget about me here.

*

The only part that Daniel cares about is how he didn't save the girl and his heart is filled with fury. He can forgive the girl, because she was so young, after all, and didn't know any better. But why forgive a man who knows some of the world's greatest secrets? He doesn't believe in the excuse of being human. He's a musician, and every detail must be perfect, or there is no point in anything. He ignores the pleas, the thoughts trying to transfer to his mind. Daniel kills the other Daniel and keeps living his life, knowing they're all dead, they're all dead except for him and it might be all his fault, and because of this he can't forgive himself, and he doesn't feel so alive anymore.
