A sharpshooter needs a reindeer, a reindeer needs a swordsman, a swordsman needs a cook, a cook needs a thief, a thief needs a rubber boy, and a rubber boy needs meat--and this is all out of the ordinary, Franky believes.
So he wonders if he's going too far when he thinks that Robin needs a cyborg in her life, and that he needs an archaeologist in his life and that it could just be the two of them and no one else and that it could be wonderful and that they could be each other's sanctuary and--
--he doesn't even know if she's found someone else yet.
Franky doesn't ask, because he doesn't want to hurt her. If she has found someone else, he's far away, maybe dead and gone because of her past or because of the merciless Grand Line. He also doesn't ask because he doesn't want or need to be rejected anymore, because he's seen enough of that in his past and he doesn't want to fall back into his own grave like he had done years before.
He doesn't ask, but it doesn't mean that his heart doesn't belong with her.
He tries to learn how to cook for Sanji so he can be the one to make her the best meals, asks Chopper to teach him how to heal wounds so that he's not completely useless when medical help is needed. He still protects her when threats arrive and when she's bleeding even when he's bleeding and ready to fall to his knees, still makes sure that her chest rises and falls, rises and falls as she sleeps because her desire to die could return at any time.
(And he'll continue to do so forever and ever and ever--even if he never gets to call her his own.)
